Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is lesson 236.  The lesson today is the difference between calm down and keep calm. Okay. Let's look at the notes here.

Adverbs of frequency

First let's look at calm down. Calm down is often used as an imperative. An

imperative it's like an order. When you tell someone do it.  Shut up.  Be quiet.  You

know,  you're ordering somebody to do something. So calm down is often used as

an imperative or order to express that someone should relax,  be less nervous

tense,  angry etc.  So be less tense nervous. All right. Let's look at

keep calm,  or we say remain calm or stay calm is used as a warning to someone not

to panic or allow oneself to get too nervous angry or upset. Yeah. So basically

calm down is used after someone has already lost control of their emotions.

They're panicking or they're screaming or they're nervous. And you  say calm down, calm down, settle down first,  remain calm,  but when

we use remain calm or stay calm.  It means they haven't lost control of

their emotions yet. We're telling someone stay calm. Don't allow yourself to do

that. That's basically what we are saying. So let's continue here. Most of the time,  students

will say calm down,  when they should be using stay calm or remain calm. If

someone has not to become very nervous or angry yet,  and you sense someone is

about to. You should tell them to remain calm. This is the problem I've come

across with a lot of students are always saying calm down. When they should be

saying remain calm stay calm because they haven't lost

control yet. So let's look at the first example. Of  course with the X,  this one is wrong.  When

I tell you this bad news,  I want you to calm down. No.  here it should be when  I

tell you this bad  news I want you to remain calm.. So with the check remain calm.  Remember you

haven't told them the bad news yet. So they they're probably not nervous or

angry yet. So you're kind of warning them.  Like yeah I'm going to  tell you this bad

news but don't panic.  Don't lose control of your emotions.  I

need you to stay,  you know,  in control.  Okay and let's take a look at the second

example here. When that tightrope walker walks across the tightrope,  he must calm

down. Yeah.  I remember tightrope walker that's like somebody in a circus they

walk across,  you know,  though the tightrope they're where they could fall.

So they have to remain calm all the time.  They can't let themselves get nervous. If

they let themselves get nervous,  they may fall. So they really have to learn how to

control their emotions. So of course here.  The correct way to say it would have

been when that tightrope walker walks across the tightrope,  he must keep calm.

He must remain calm.  He can't allow himself to ever get too

nervous or otherwise he might,  he might actually fall. Okay,  anyway. I hope

it's clear. I  hope you can clearly see the difference now between calm down keep

calm and  remain calm. Anyway I hope it's
