  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Proverbs 136. The proverb today is enough is

  • enough. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. Nowadays, enough is enough as a

  • proverb is mostly used when someone feels a particular situation needs to

  • stop. Like that's it . I can't take anymore. It usually implies that something bad

  • has lasted way too long or gone too far and one is fed up. You know that's when

  • you're fed up. Like your patience has run out and you

  • you don't want to take anymore or accept anymore. And no longer has patience to work

  • it out. So we say enough is enough or enough is enough already.

  • All right. Let's continue. Yes. So here he says the origin of the proverb goes back to

  • John Haywoods book of Proverbs in the sixteenth century. And we mentioned him a

  • number of times because I've done so many Proverbs and you know it's always

  • an old one was mentioned in his book. The 16th century is probably the 1500s. He

  • didn't actually write all the proverbs. He collected them and he had a whole

  • book of proverbs that were already out and around at that time. So we may not

  • know who actually was the first one to say it, but this was probably the

  • earliest citing of it that we could find. The original proverb had a more

  • positive meaning. It meant it was good enough and no more was needed. So it doesn't

  • really have that ... it didn't really have the meaning it has today. But it was

  • still a proverb and it was in the book of Proverbs. Enough is enough. Enough is enough

  • meaning well that's enough. You don't have to overload me or give me too much.

  • You don't need anymore. However let's continue.

  • However the proverbs started to have its present meaning during the civil rights

  • movement and the feminist movement in the 1960s. The civil rights movement is

  • probably the earlier 1960s. That was the movement you know, with Martin Luther

  • King. You know and of course you know many African Americans trying to get

  • more fair rights at that time. So saying enough is enough.

  • Enough of a bad treatment. That's , that's enough. No more. It must stop and the feminist

  • movement of course , you know, to have more opportunities. We say enough is enough.

  • Okay. Both of them I think used this kind of like a slogan or we heard it a

  • lot during their campaigns in order to get more attention. Enough is enough . They

  • can't take anymore. All right. Since that time the expression

  • has grown very popular and it's used for anyone complaining about almost anything

  • now. So we often hear enough is enough already. When is this going to stop. So

  • that's the way we use it. All right. So let's look at the one example. We have here what are

  • they going to fix this. You know maybe, when are they going to fix this road ? Or fix

  • this machine ? Enough is enough already. So somebody probably has already lost their

  • patience and it's complaining about it. This is just the way we hear it. Anyway I

  • hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
