  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Idioms 218.

  • All right.

  • The name of idiom today is make a mountain out of a molehill.

  • All right . Let's take a look at the note here.

  • If someone makes a mountain out of a molehill, he or she exaggerates something or puts too

  • much emphasis on an insignificant issue.

  • Or at least you think it is insignificant.

  • You think it is not that important.

  • All right.

  • Now a molehill, literally a molehill is a small pile of dirt that is made by a mole.

  • A mole is an animal that lives underground, they usually have very poor eyesight.

  • That is digging underground.

  • It is very small.

  • So if you say someone is making a mountain out of a molehill , it means you are exaggerating.

  • A molehill is tiny you are comparing it to a real mountain.

  • So the importance of this issue is more like a molehill which is really small and a mountain

  • is really huge.

  • But you are acting like, it is important enough like a whole mountain.

  • So that is where the idea of this comes from.

  • All right . Anyway, let's look at several examples here.

  • This is just the way.

  • We would use it.

  • Example number one.

  • Stop exaggerating.

  • You always make a mountain out of a molehill.

  • Yeah.

  • You could almost hear someone saying that, Using those exact words.

  • Number two.

  • This is not serious at all.

  • Don't make a mountain out of a molehill.

  • Yeah, very often people will say that.

  • They'll say don't do that.

  • Don't make a mountain out of a molehill.

  • And number three.

  • The media is making a mountain out of a molehill.

  • What is the big deal ? This is nothing of significance, especially nowadays for some

  • reason .the media wants to jump on a particular story and make it seem much more important

  • than it really is.

  • In that case we are saying they are making a mountain out of a molehill.

  • It is not that big a deal.

  • It is not that significant.

  • But they are making it sound like it is.

  • Anyway, I hope you got it . I hope it is clear.

  • Thank you for your time.

  • Bye-bye.
