  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Verb Phrase 113. The verb phrase today

  • is to gulp back. Okay. Let's take a look at the note. If someone

  • gulps back, he or she tries not to cry or show ones true feelings by swallowing

  • quickly. Yeah. Kind of , you know , that that's an exaggerated one. But something

  • like that. You know, something like that. I don't know if you could hear that. All

  • right. Let's continue. It is often used in phrases to gulp back tears.

  • we, you know, try to do it that way. Hold back the tears. Kind of that way or sobs.

  • Remember sobs especially the way like little kids cry sometimes. When they're

  • (sobbing sounds ) Yeah. That's kind of like sobbing. Okay, sobs etc. All right. So remember. Gulp, gulp by

  • itself is the action or sound when you swallow. So even if you were just

  • drinking, (gulping sounds ) you know, when you're drinking something. a lot. That's gulping. All

  • right. So again let's look at some examples the way we might use it as the

  • verb phrase. During the funeral eulogy, remember that's the speech that they

  • give at a funeral usually to say a lot of good things about the person that

  • just passed away. So during the funeral eulogy he had to gulp back his tears. You

  • know, maybe he was like you know , maybe almost wanted to cry. But the gulping

  • kind of helped helped him to control his tears. Something like that,

  • or number two. Even though, she tried, she was unable to gulp back her sobs. You

  • know, (sobbing sounds ) maybe you're trying but you can't do it. Something like that. Or the third one.

  • Here's the third example. After a devastating loss. Yeah. A really bad kind of

  • shocking loss. After a devastating loss he gulped back his humiliation.

  • So maybe , a little embarrassed. But still like when you know, trying to, trying to hold back
