  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Idioms 244. The idiom today is \" as it stands.\" Okay.

  • Let's take a look at the note here. If we say something as it stands, it means at

  • this time or as it is now in the present situation or in the present condition or

  • under these conditions. That's as it is now. So the way it is at this moment. You

  • know, if nothing changes that's as it is. So that's as it stands. Okay. And remember

  • here of course. Stand by itself really just means in to be in a particular

  • situation or to be in a particular state. So that's what we mean. The state that

  • it's in right now in the situation it is in. As it's in right now. If it doesn't

  • change , this is as it stands. This is the way it is at the moment. All right. So

  • let's continue. Let's look at a couple of examples here. The first example. This bill

  • like this bill you know, a bill you are trying to get through Congress. The legislators got

  • to argue about it. So this bill as it stands will not protect the average

  • citizen. It will favor companies. So this bill as it stands, meaning in its present

  • form, in its present state, at the moment, unless they make changes to it, it won't

  • favor American citizens. It'll favor companies. That's what we mean so unless

  • they change something. That's the way it is. All right or number two here. As it

  • stands now again now , at the present time. This airline will not have any available

  • seats on their flights for three days. Yeah. Maybe this is somebody they are trying

  • to get out of someplace. And maybe they have a ticket. But the ticket with the

  • airline they have, there's no available flights for three days. Of course in a

  • situation like this you could always try to do what we call standby and hope

  • somebody doesn't show up for the flight. But you know as it stands there's no

  • available seat. So there's no guarantee that you'd even be able to get on a

  • flight. You, you could do that. Some people do it and maybe everybody showed up then

  • you went to the airport for no reason. They, they weren't able to get a seat for

  • you. Okay. let's look at number three. As it

  • stands now, there are no available rooms for the whole holiday unless we get a

  • cancellation. So the way it is now, in this state , in this situation, the way it is

  • presently m at the moment, there are no available rooms. So maybe somebody you

  • know, decided late they wanted to go there for the holiday and maybe all the

  • rooms in all the hotels are all booked up. So they couldn't get it and, and this

  • is maybe what a hotel is saying. Unless somebody calls up and cancels you know,

  • at the last moment then we don't have any available rooms. So as it stands right now

  • there's nothing. Okay. Good. And yeah I guess that's it. So anyway,

  • I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
