Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Adjective Phrase 11. The adjective

phrase today is top notch. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. If

something is top notch,  it is the best of its type or it is of excellent quality.

That's what we mean if we say something is top notch. Okay. Here's a good point.

Top notch could be used with or without a hyphen So you can find it both ways. And let's

look at the word \"notch\" by itself. So if we say notch by itself. If you move up

or down a notch you move to a higher or lower level. So now you can kind of

understand where the idea of top notch came from because if it's the top notch,

it's the highest level. It is the best level but like like on a list or on a

ranking if you move up a notch or down a notch you move to a higher level or a

lower level so this is where we got the idea for top notch. So top notch would be

the highest level the top level. Okay good. Let's go on. All right. So let's,  let's

take a look at a few examples here. So he has a reputation for being a top notch

lawyer. Yeah. This is a perfect example. Or number two. You could say that four-star

restaurant only hires top notch chefs.  You could say that . Or number three you

could say her skill is top notch.  All right.  One thing to note. If the top

notch comes directly before a noun you're probably a little more likely

to put the hyphen in and maybe if you find it without the hyphen it's probably with when

it's not used directly before a noun. So you might see it both ways. Okay. And one

other little point . To mention here.  Notch is also used to mean a hole in

your belt. So every time you move you know one forward or backward that's

another notch. So we can give one example of that. So as he lost weight , he was able

to move the belt over another notch Yeah. Or if you gain weight you have
