  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Music Lyrics explained 19.

  • All right. The song today is a Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison. That's the one we're

  • going cover. Yeah. Roy Orbison originally had a really big hit with this song in

  • the 1960s in the mid-1960s and then of course he got a revival like

  • around 1990 when the movie Pretty Woman came out and it played that song again.

  • And he kind of was able to almost get a bit of a comeback at that time. Even

  • though he had a pretty good career he had some other big hits besides this one.

  • It's a little ironic in a way though because in real life Roy Orbison

  • actually, he was kind of partially visually impaired. He wasn't blind but

  • his sight was really really bad. It was really really poor. He had dark glasses. He

  • always wore these dark glasses. So you sometimes wondered I mean can he really

  • distinguish pretty women or or not. But anyway it was it was always a good song.

  • It was a catchy song. It's a classic and you still hear it all the time now. So

  • let's get into it. Just like usual you know, I'll read the lyrics and the song

  • and I'll explain any words that need to be sung. So let's start. This is how it

  • how it begins. Pretty woman walking down the street. Pretty woman the kind I'd

  • like to meet. Pretty woman I don't believe you, you're not the truth. No one

  • could look as good as you. And then he says 'mercy.' All right. All

  • right. So let's cover this. A pretty woman walking down the street. Of course, so he

  • probably sees her passing by. Pretty woman the kind I like to meet. Well,

  • most guys like to meet pretty women. So that's not that unusual. A pretty woman, I

  • don't believe you, you're not the truth. All right. This is the first line I point

  • out here. Basically, he's saying you're too good to be true . How is it possible

  • that you could be this beautiful ?i It's almost like a dream. Basically, no one

  • could look as good as you. So you know, you almost can't be real. How can you be

  • that beautiful ? And then of course he says 'mercy. \" Like like have mercy on me.

  • You know, well alleviate my distress. You, you

  • you're so beautiful that you make me want to you know, meet you or desire you.

  • Can't you relieve my, my , my pain my ache of , you know, relieve my distress.

  • Have compassion for me. So mercy you know, So that's what he would say. All right.

  • Good and then it goes on to the next chorus. Pretty woman

  • won't you pardon me. Pretty woman I couldn't help but see. Pretty woman, that

  • you look lonely as can be. Are you lonely just like me ? And then he gives like a

  • little a ... well I guess they describe it as a growl, but it sounded more like a

  • purr. It was like you know, he does something like that Whoa ! Well it gets him so

  • excited. All right. So let's go on then. So pretty woman won't you pardon me.

  • Remember you pardon, you, you forgive somebody for doing or saying something

  • wrong or maybe he means for for him desiring her so much. Could you forgive me ?

  • Won't you pardon me. Pretty woman I couldn't help but see. You know, you're

  • just too beautiful. I couldn't help that. Remember any time you say, you couldn't

  • help but do something. This phrase basically means that no one ... that you

  • can't control your emotions, or your desire or your behavior. I couldn't help

  • but see. Pretty woman that you look lonely just like me. Yeah. Pretty .... are

  • you lonely ? Just like me. Yeah, yeah. That you look

  • lovely as can be. All right. Well, lovely meaning very attractive or easy to like.

  • That you look lovely as can be. Are you lonely just like me ? And then of course

  • he gives that growl. I don't know something like that. All right. Let's go on. Go

  • to the next chorus. Pretty woman stop a while. Pretty woman, talk a while.

  • Pretty woman give your smile to me. Pretty woman yeah, yeah , yeah. Pretty woman

  • look my way. Pretty woman. Say you'll stay with me , because

  • I need you. I'll treat you right. Come with me baby. Be mine tonight. And then it goes (instrumental music) Of course,

  • the instrumental was pretty good. All right. So let's go over that. Pretty woman stop a while

  • You know, like stop hey! Stop.talk to me. Pretty woman talk a while. Pretty woman

  • give me your smile. You know like smile at me. Pretty woman yeah, yeah, yeah. Pretty

  • woman look my way. All right. So look in my direction. Look my way.

  • Pretty woman say you'll stay with me. Cuz, cuz of course meaning because of course.

  • I need you I'll treat you right. Well you know, if you ... if you come with me, if you

  • you know, meet me become my girlfriend I'll be good to you. I won't mistreat you right.

  • Come with me baby. Be mine tonight. And then he goes on and on. Okay. So all right.

  • Let's go to the next part. It goes pretty woman. Don't walk on by. Pretty woman

  • don't make me cry. Pretty woman don't walk away

  • Hey. Oh if that's the way, it must be. Okay. Okay and then then it goes (instrumental music)

  • That's of course other instrumental part goes. So

  • pretty woman don't walk on by me. Don't pass me by. If we walk on by you. don't,

  • don't just walk on by. Stop. Talk to me. Pretty woman don't make me cry ( crying sounds) Don't

  • make me cry Pretty woman. Don't walk away hey ! Oh if that's the way it must be. Okay.

  • Okay well, I guess that's the way life is. All right. Well, I tried. Okay. Let's

  • continue. Let's go to the next verse. I guess , I guess I'll go home it's

  • late. They'll be , they'll be tomorrow night but wait, What do I see ? And then

  • of course it goes back into the instrumental again. (instrumental music ) Is she walking back

  • to me ? Yeah. She's walking back to me . Oh

  • Pretty woman. And that's how it goes. So yeah. That's actually a pretty simple

  • song. It's not as much to explain but I guess I'll go home it's late. So he was,

  • he was just about to give up actually. They'll be tomorrow night. But wait you

  • know, Maybe , maybe, another day I'll be luckier. What do I see ? Is she walking

  • back to me ? Maybe, maybe he did get her attention. Who knows ?

  • Yeah. She's walking back to me. Oh pretty woman . Yeah. Well, again. i t was a very catchy

  • song. It's a classic. I'm sure most of you know it. I'm sure you probably... if you're

  • old enough you definitely remember it. From the ...from the movie Pretty

  • Woman. But it was a classic song before that. It's always replayed even till

  • today. You'll still hear this song. You know, classic rock music. Okay. Anyway, I

  • hope you got it. I hope you enjoyed it. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
