Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Verb Phrase 119. The verb phrase today is

Past simple

to live off. So live off somebody or live off something. All right. And we got three

Present continuous

different definitions that we're going to cover today and give examples for you.

For each of them.  Let's look at number one here. If someone

lives off something,  he or she regularly gets a supply of money for something or

already has a large supply of money that could be used to live on and maybe you

were lucky. Maybe you inherited a lot of money or you won a lottery or something.

Or number two here. To get money from someone else , especially when you don't

work for your own income. So this one you're living off of someone for sure

and you depend on someone else. Okay.  And the third meaning here means to mostly

or only eat a particular type of food. So you're living off this type of food. So

maybe just living off of potatoes or I don't know living off of our onions or

whatever it is that you're living off of means that's mostly what you eat. All

right. So let's look the first example here. After he retired,  he was able to

live off his pension. All  right. This would be one where you know,  you're regularly

getting the supply of money. It's being like mailed to you. So you'll be living

off a pension. You could be living off your Social Security. So every month or so

your email to check and you got so much money and you could live on that money

So you could live off of that. Number two. Many,  many senior citizens are having

difficulty living off of their social security check these days. So you

could put it that way.Then again it's another one that comes regularly. Or you

can have difficulty living off something too. It could be hard to do it. Number

three here. That homeless person is only able to live off the charity of others.

All right. Now this is more like the second one. You're getting money from someone

else,  especially when you're not working yourself. So you're depending on that.

All right. And number four it's also like from the second meaning. Even though , she

graduated from university three years ago,  Mary is still living off her parents.

oH yeah. A lot of young people these days they graduate from university they have

trouble finding jobs and a lot of times.  That's still living off their parents

for years. After they graduated. Okay and number five. The last one here. She is so

hard up for money. So desperate for money.  Now.  Jane has been living off instant

noodles for several months. Yeah so you could just be living off one particular

type of food. You know. So if she doesn't have a lot of money so maybe that's all
