  • Hello and welcome to Graz.

  • My name is David and today I would like to show you around my hometown.

  • Graz is the second-biggest city in Austria, located in the southeast of the country.

  • It's a place that is really close to my heart. I was born here

  • and I have often lived abroad, but I always come back to Graz.

  • In the heart of the city stands the Schlossberg, the Castle Mountain.

  • Here you'll also find the #1 symbol of our city: the Clock Tower or Uhrturm.

  • According to some legends, this clock has been guarding us

  • for almost 800 years now.

  • Graz is a large, beautiful, old town. One of the biggest of its kind in Europe.

  • It's a UNESCO cultural world heritage site.

  • And throughout the city you can find about fifty courtyards, big and small

  • from different architectural eras.

  • These courtyards must be discovered. So be curious in Graz!

  • This is one of the highlights of the old town of Graz.

  • The double spiral staircase in the former imperial palace.

  • This unique staircase is a masterpiece of Gothic stone masonry.

  • As you can see, there are no pillars anymore. The entire construction supports itself.

  • Graz has a Mediterranean influence and a vibrant outdoor lifestyle.

  • There are a lot of cafés and terraces.

  • There are about 60,000 students in Graz, who study at one of the many universities.

  • This has a big impact on the city life.

  • We have a lot of festivals, electronic music and jazz.

  • The Austrian film festival takes place here, so you'll never get bored in Graz.

  • We're now at a place that is very typical for Graz. This is a sausage stand.

  • There are plenty in the old town, and it's also a social thing.

  • Lawyers, construction workers, and both young and old people come here.

  • This is my favourite sausage. It's calledsekrainer. Käse means cheese.

  • It's filled with cheese and it's delicious. Mahlzeit!

  • You've seen quite a few parts of the old town now

  • but Graz is also known for its contemporary architecture and design.

  • The very young and creative scene is on the other side of the river: the Lend district.

  • A symbol connecting these two parts of the city is the Murinsel.

  • Here we cross the river.

  • Since a few years ago, Graz is one of the few UNESCO Cities of Design worldwide.

  • One very good example of that is the Kunsthaus.

  • This is a contemporary art museum for changing exhibitions.

  • We call it 'the friendly alien'. It looks weird but doesn't harm the old surroundings.

  • We are now in the Lend district, the trendiest part of Graz.

  • Here you'll find a lot of independent labels, designer shops, art galleries, etc.

  • Young people try out different things here and open their own shop.

  • You can feel there's a different vibe in this area, making it unique.

  • One of my favourite shops here is tag.werk, a bag shop.

  • My name is Beatrix Lorber, manager at tag.werk.

  • We sell high-quality, handmade designer bags

  • however tag.werk is also a social project for young adults.

  • They learn to create things with their own hands. This boosts their confidence.

  • Each bag shows who designed and created it.

  • Since 2008, Graz has been the culinary capital of Austria.

  • It's easy to see why. We have a lot of farmers' markets.

  • The farmers all come from Graz. The city has 800 farmers.

  • They come here to sell their produce directly to the clients.

  • Here you can shop for fresh vegetables, fruit, sausages, fish and cheese.

  • It's not just a market. It's also a meeting place for people.

  • Now I've shown you around Graz city centre, but its surroundings are also beautiful.

  • The southern area is known for its wine.

  • The best place to experience the wine culture is at a Buschenschank.

  • This one has been run by thegl family for many generations.

  • The family also has its own winery.

  • In their Buschenschank, they serve their homemade food, spreads

  • and most importantly, their own wine.

  • I am sitting next to Tamaragl, a member of the youngest generation.

  • We are a traditional winery. I've been running it for ten years now.

  • Our products are organic. We grow wine on 10 hectares of land

  • on these nice, steep slopes.

  • This wine is from a single vineyard and was made in 2013.

  • I will also give you a single vineyard wine produced in 2011 …

  • so that you can compare the different harvests.

  • Sauvignon Blanc has given Austria a great wine reputation

  • in this competitive market. I love my job.

  • Ready for some typical Austrian food now?

  • Oh yes, sure.

  • Cheers!

  • These are my friends. We're going for some drinks at the City Beach.

  • I hope you enjoyed our day together and will come back again soon.

  • Let's go for some drinks now. See you around!

Hello and welcome to Graz.
