  • Hello, I'm Andrew Marston and welcome to Tour Japan

  • The show where I tell you about a place in Japan and then we go there.

  • Today we're headed to the Shrine and Temples of Nikko.

  • Now, Nikko isn't exactly part of Tokyo... in fact, it's about two hours to the north.

  • But this season I wanted to include at least one location

  • that would make a great day or weekend trip from Tokyo and Nikko is a great pick.

  • This area of Nikko is a UNESCO world heritage site

  • and many of the buildings have also been designated as national treasures of Japan.

  • And as an added double-bonus

  • the whole complex was built on a mountainside with beautiful nature everywhere.

  • One noteworthy location is the Toshogu Shrine

  • Dedicated to none other than Tokugawa Ieyasu himself.

  • In the history of Japan, Tokugawa Ieyasu was a stand-out leader.

  • It was he who founded the Edo period

  • or as it's also called, the Tokugawa Shogunate.

  • This was 200 years of peace from the early 1600s to the mid 1800s.

  • His shrine in Nikko is one of the most lavishly decorated shrines in all of Japan.

  • And, if you walk up enough stairs, it's also where you can find the tomb where he's buried.

  • So sit back and relax as we explore the Shrine and Temples of Nikko.

  • Hopefully that gives you a good idea of what it's like to travel to the Shrines and Temples of Nikko

  • If you've been, I'd love to hear your recommendations in the comments

  • as well as your suggestions for where we should film future episodes of Tour Japan.

  • Lastly, I have some good news and I have some bad news.

  • The bad news is that this is the last episode of season one of Tour Japan

  • so there will be no new episode next week.

  • But the good news is that season two is definitely happening

  • and I've put information about its release date in the description.

  • So if you like this show, make to subscribe so you don't miss it.
