  • Last episode we introduced Starbucks vocabulary

  • today, I’ll be teaching about the traditional holiday, Mid-Autumn Festival

  • and the English vocabulary you should know!

  • It is again that time of the year when we celebrate

  • Mid-Autumn Festival with our loved ones

  • This festival is often celebrated

  • around September and October

  • Many Chinese rank it as the second most important festival

  • of the Chinese culture, right after Chinese New Year

  • First of all, let's look at the word, 中秋節

  • 中秋節 in English is Mid-Autumn Festival

  • This festival is also called Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival

  • Next up, 月餅

  • 月餅 in English is mooncake

  • The most popular and important tradition

  • during this festival is to eat mooncakes

  • This is a cake made with wheat flour

  • and a variety of different flavored stuffings

  • Mooncakes are often round-shaped

  • this is because in Chinese culture

  • roundness symbolizes completeness and togetherness

  • Then we have, 柚子

  • 柚子 in English is pomelo

  • Pomelo is the most commonly eaten fruit during this festival

  • Next we have, 桂花酒

  • 桂花酒 in English is cassia wine

  • (Isn't Ke$ha that singer?)

  • Yeah

  • Tick-tock on the clock (Tik Tok lyrics)

  • Tonight, make it pop, DJ...... (wrong lyrics lol XD)

  • Drinking this wine signifies a happy life and family reunion

  • Then we have, 烤肉

  • 烤肉 in English is barbecue

  • People would either barbecue out in the open or in restaurants

  • Then, 團圓飯

  • 團圓飯 in English is reunion dinner

  • Next, 燈籠

  • 燈籠 in English is lantern

  • Next we have, 傳說

  • 傳說 in English is myth

  • The most popular myth and legend for this festival is

  • 嫦娥奔月 Chang’e flying to the moon

  • Legend has it that

  • Chang’e drank the elixir of immortality and flew to the moon

  • That is why this festival is often depicted

  • with the picture of a beautiful lady with the moon

  • As you can see, today I tried cosplaying into 嫦娥 and

  • here's the moon

  • Similarity 100%

  • Then we have, 賞月

  • 賞月 in English is moon-gazing

  • Last, 颱風

  • 颱風 in English is typhoon

  • Typhoons usually occur

  • in the late summer and early autumn time in Taiwan

  • Depending on the location of their occurrences

  • even though they are all the same, they will be called different names

  • In the northwestern Pacific, these storms are calledtyphoons

  • in the Atlantic, these storms are calledhurricanes

  • and in the Indian Ocean, these storms are calledcyclones

  • And now that you know all the basics about the Moon Festival
