Hello everybody it’s Ray, today we’re gonna explore some quotes on learning
Welcome to my YouTube channel, for those of you who don’t know, I’m a Taiwanese YouTuber and I teach people English online
And from time to time I make full English videos, like what I’m doing right now
so that my subscribers can practice English listening and maybe pick up (學起來) a few useful phrases along the way (沿途)
Before we start, I would like to remind you that you CAN turn on captions (字幕)
it would help you out quite a bit if you have trouble following me as I go along
The CC button is right down here, I suppose, so click on this button to see the full English transcript (逐字稿)
Today I’m really excited to bring you a new format (形式) of vlogging, which I’m gonna name “Quotes On”
In this format I’ll be talking about a particular topic
and giving you some of my opinions and my beliefs while providing you with great quotes by great people
But to be honest, I’ve cherry-picked (精挑細選) all these quotes so that they validate (驗證) my opinion
Yeah, that’s what they said
Since this is our first video ever under this format
I’ll be talking about the most fundamental (基本的), conspicuous (明顯的), and meaningful (有意義的) element (元素) of this channel
Making awful jokes and leaving awkward pauses
Yeah
Actually I mean learning. Right? You’re here to learn English, right? Duh! You know, this channel, Ray Du English, learning English...
and in order to validate myself I’m gonna give you the first quote of our video today
“My brother’s channel is highly educational”, by my sister. (I didn’t say that)
Okay, jokes aside, today I’m gonna focus on three things that I believe in education
Number one, learning is always possible. Number two, learning is doing. And number three, teaching is learning
So to start off, I’ve got a quote here by American author Brian Herbert
“The capacity (容量) to learn is a gift, the ability to learn is a skill, but the willingness (意願) to learn is a choice.”
That said, it’s very daunting (使畏縮) for us sometimes when we look at something we wanna learn
Especially when we look at someone who is already really good at it
For example, for those of you who want to speak English fluently, you might perhaps see this video and go
“Wow that is impossible, there’s no way that I can speak as fluently as this...
amazing...good-looking...man...."
I’m sorry, I’m sorry
But! Think of it this way, I had to start learning the same way you did. From my ABCs
There was a time in my past that I couldn’t even pronounce the word “apple”. Apple? Apple? A..a... Er, yeah, apple
So instead of giving yourself excuses over why you shouldn’t learn
remember that learning is a conscious (自覺的) choice, and choosing to learn is the first step to learning anything
But after you’ve made the decision to learn, how you learn matters
If you’re just gonna sit in a classroom and call that learning. Well, here’s what one of the founding fathers of America, Benjamin Franklin, said
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”
Benjamin Franklin is a renowned (聞名) polymath (博學者), which means his expertise (專業) spans (橫跨) across different fields
so you can’t go wrong listening to him for tips on learning
Now, he maintains (主張) that learning comes from being involved, that is to say, learning is an active process
As Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin corp puts it: “You don't learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.”
so learning is doing, sometimes failing, but doing
A lot of people come around asking me “what is the best way to learn English”'
and even after my best efforts, most of them didn’t end up “doing”
They were content (滿足) with just listening to the solution instead of trying it out
Especially when I tell them “Oh you’ll have to work for it”, they’d be like “Nah, I’m good”. Why did you even ask in the first place?
I love this quote by American author Lloyd Alexander
“We learn more by looking for the answer to a question and not finding it than we do from learning the answer itself.”
Look, it’s like this. Learning is a journey
You can have people come telling you what’s on the other side of the hill, but you have to embark (出發) on that journey to claim (奪取) it
Like my pastor puts it
“It is to learn, use, and most importantly put into practice. Only then will it be remembered by your body, never to be forgotten.”
So if you don’t want to forget, put it into practice
Always seek ways to practice what you’ve learnt in the classroom
Take English for example: find people to talk to, find websites to visit, find stuff to do in English, basically
But the best way, the single best method that I personally use to learn is actually to teach
Here we have our last quote from French philosopher Joseph Joubert, “To teach is to learn twice.”
If you want to teach someone, you have to figure things out first. It is, in its own right (本身就是), a form of active learning
When you teach, you are compelled (迫使) to assimilate (吸收), integrate (整合), and reiterate (重申) knowledge
Yes, I did spent three hours trying to put those three words into a rhyme (押韻)
And that is exactly what I’m doing on this channel. Having started a little more than a year ago
I’ve accumulated (累積) millions of views on my educational videos and I’ve received a lot of feedback (回饋) appreciating me for the effort
But in all honesty, I sincerely think that this is a humbling (使謙遜) experience because
I think I’m the one who’ve learned the most on this channel. Teaching is learning
So after all these great quotes on learning, and maybe a little bit of my own opinion
the most important thing that you can do now is to memorize them, and start impressing people with your wisdom
If you like this video, please give it a thumbs up, it really helps me out a lot and because this is a new series I look forward to hearing you guys
what’s your take (你的看法) on this topic, what do you think about learning
and plus, what do you want a future “Quotes On” episode to be on, what kind of topic would you like to hear from me
And, if you want to look at more videos on a weekly basis, you can click on the subscribe button, right up here, to subscribe to my channel
the channel from which you learned a lot from, I hope. And I also have a Facebook and Instagram account, you can search for Ray Du English
This is my previous video, and this is my blog. And... I think that’s it! Yep, that is a wrap
thank you guys for watching, as always, and I’ll catch you guys next time. See ya! (See ya!)
