  • KIDS: Let's Go Walking!

  • NOELIA: Crossing Intersections Safely!

  • TY: Okay, pedestrians,

  • TY: can you tell me what an intersection is?

  • SEAN: It's where two streets come together.

  • KATE: It can be small.

  • DREW: Or it can be big.

  • SYDNEI: Why would you need to cross an intersection?

  • BRANDON: To get to the library.

  • CYRANI: To walk to school.

  • SOPHIA: To go to play softball.

  • NOELIA: To get to the bus stop.

  • TY: Crossing intersections can be tricky,

  • TY: because traffic is coming from several directions.

  • TY: Do you know how to be a smart pedestrian

  • TY: when you're crossing an intersection?

  • KIDS: Yes!

  • SYDNEI: Let's see.

  • SYDNEI: What are the 5 steps you need to remember

  • SYDNEI: to cross intersections safely?

  • BRANDON: Find a safe place to cross!

  • NOELIA: Stop at the edge!

  • KATE: Look and listen for traffic!

  • CYRANI: Look for traffic signs or signals!

  • NOELIA: Cross quickly and safely!

  • TY: Very good!

  • TY: These steps sound familiar,

  • TY: like the ones for crossing the street.

  • TY: Let's go through each step.

  • BRANDON: Find a safe place to cross!

  • TY: Here's a big question.

  • TY: Is it safer to cross at an intersection

  • TY: or in the middle of the block?

  • NOELIA: It's safer to cross at an intersection

  • NOELIA: because that's where drivers expect

  • NOELIA: to see pedestrians crossing the street.

  • BRANDON: When there is a marked crosswalk

  • BRANDON: in the middle of the block,

  • BRANDON: then that's a safe place to cross

  • BRANDON: away from an intersection.

  • BRANDON: But I always wait for drivers to stop

  • BRANDON: before I cross at a mid-block crosswalk.

  • SYDNEI: So how do you find a safe place to cross

  • SYDNEI: at an intersection?

  • BRANDON: I look for a marked, or painted, crosswalk,

  • BRANDON: because it's the safest place to cross.

  • SOPHIA: If there's no painted crosswalk,

  • SOPHIA: I cross at the corner.

  • TY: Good!

  • NOELIA: Stop at the edge!

  • TY: The next step is Stop at the Edge.

  • TY: How do you Stop at the Edge

  • TY: for an intersection?

  • NOELIA: I stop at the edge of the road

  • NOELIA: or the sidewalk;

  • NOELIA: I don't step into the road.

  • DREW: I face the direction I want to walk.

  • KATE: Look and listen for traffic!

  • SYDNEI: Do you know the right way

  • SYDNEI: to look and listen for traffic?

  • SYDNEI: Remember,

  • SYDNEI: cars may be coming from behind you

  • SYDNEI: or in front of you!

  • KATE: Look Left!

  • SOPHIA: Look Right!

  • KATE: Look Left Again!

  • SOPHIA: Look Front!

  • KATE: Look Behind!

  • DREW: And I always remember

  • DREW: to listen for traffic!

  • CYRANI: Look for traffic signs or signals!

  • TY: At intersections

  • TY: you also need to Look

  • TY: for Traffic Signs and Signals.

  • TY: What are some traffic signs or signals?

  • TY: What do they tell drivers and pedestrians?

  • SEAN: A Stop Sign.

  • SEAN: It tells drivers they need to stop,

  • SEAN: check all directions for other cars and pedestrians,

  • SEAN: then cross the intersection.

  • SEAN: A traffic signal.

  • SEAN: Yellow tells drivers to slow down.

  • SEAN: Red tells them to stop.

  • SEAN: Green tells them to go.

  • SYDNEI: What are the signals at intersections

  • SYDNEI: for pedestrians?

  • SYDNEI: What do they tell you?

  • A pedestrian signal tells me when to walk

  • CYRANI: and when NOT to walk.

  • CYRANI: The red hand

  • CYRANI: or red "Don't Walk" tells me to wait.

  • CYRANI: The white symbol of a person walking

  • CYRANI: or the white "Walk"

  • CYRANI: tells me to cross now with caution.

  • CYRANI: Numbers counting down

  • CYRANI: tell me how much time I have left to cross.

  • CYRANI: The flashing red hand or "Don't Walk"

  • CYRANI: tells me to finish crossing

  • CYRANI: if I'm already in the street,

  • CYRANI: but to wait for the next walk signal

  • CYRANI: if I haven't started crossing.

  • TY: At an intersection with a pedestrian signal,

  • TY: when should you cross?

  • CYRANI: I always wait for the next Walk symbol.

  • CYRANI: When I see the Walk symbol

  • CYRANI: in the direction I want to go,

  • CYRANI: I look left-right-left-front-behind

  • CYRANI: and listen for traffic.

  • CYRANI: Then I step into the street

  • CYRANI: only when it is safe to cross.

  • SYDNEI: Some intersections don't have pedestrian signals.

  • SYDNEI: How do you know when to cross there?

  • NOELIA: I look at the traffic signals

  • NOELIA: and wait for a green light

  • NOELIA: in the direction I want to go.

  • NOELIA: I look left-right-left-front-behind

  • NOELIA: and listen for traffic.

  • NOELIA: Then I step into the street

  • NOELIA: only when it is safe to cross.

  • SOPHIA: Cross quickly and safely!

  • TY: How do you cross the street quickly and safely?

  • SOPHIA: I walk quickly, but I do not run.

  • BRANDON: I keep my head up

  • BRANDON: and look for cars in all directions

  • BRANDON: because cars can come up quickly.

  • SEAN: I walk straight across.

  • NOELIA: Where there is a painted crosswalk.

  • NOELIA: I stay within the lines.

  • SYDNEI: Let's review the 5 steps you need to remember

  • SYDNEI: to cross intersections safely.

  • BRANDON: Find a safe place to cross!

  • NOELIA: Stop at the edge!

  • KATE: Look and listen for traffic!

  • CYRANI: Look for traffic signs or signals!

  • NOELIA: Cross quickly and safely!

  • SYDNEI: Learning how to cross intersections safely

  • SYDNEI: is another big step

  • SYDNEI: on your way to being a smart pedestrian.
