  • Hello everyone!

  • Today's idiom is: be that as it may.

  • Be that as it may.

  • Alright, this idiom is a little tough to imagine, but let's just break down the words a little bit, okay?

  • So, 'be that', yeah, this is one thing, 'be that'.

  • 'As it may', may, it might, yeah?

  • Be that as it may...

  • Yeah, it might be.

  • Very difficult, this one.

  • Okay, so let's listen to a couple of examples and try to break down what it might mean

  • and an alternative... what it, how we could say it.

  • Alright, the first example:

  • You can save a lot of money shopping at the grocery store.

  • Be that as it may, I still prefer shopping at convenience stores.

  • Alright, so the one person said, 'Shopping at the grocery store is best. You can save money,'

  • and this person said, 'Yes, that might be true,' right, 'Be that as it may, I still prefer shopping at the convenience store.'

  • Right, so they had two opinions and he listened and said,

  • 'Yeah, maybe your opinion is right, but I still have a different opinion.'

  • Yeah, I understand you, but I have a different idea.

  • Okay, be that as it may, I have a different idea.

  • Alright, so let's listen to another example.

  • So, do you think my ideas are any good?

  • Yes, but be that as it may, I still want to go with my idea.

  • Okay, so they're talking about different ideas and his ideas are good, but he likes his ideas better, right?

  • So, his ideas are good. Be that as it way, I like mine better.

  • Alright, so this phrase is useful in a situation we want to show we are listening to other ideas and opinions.

  • We are listening and we understand, okay?

  • But, it doesn't matter the other idea, I like mine best, right?

  • So, I'm listening to other choices and maybe I understand they're good choices, okay, but I still prefer mine.

  • Yeah, it's a good choice. Be that as it may, let's do my choice, okay?

  • So, this is a very useful phrase, a little difficult to use, though.

  • So, let's try to use it next time you want to show someone that you're listening, right?

  • It's not falling on deaf ears, you're listening and you care what they think and you understand,

  • but you want to go a different direction for another reason, alright?

  • So, next time let's try using 'be that as it may' and I'll see you next time!
