I am currently in the wintery wonderland that is Hokkaido, and

it is currently negative 17 degrees Celsius and it is freezing.

But what could be a better thing to do on a really freezing cold, snowy day than go out and wear a wedding dress and take wedding pictures?

I'm not going to be putting the dress on.

Some friends of mine just got married and they're with me on this trip, and

we're going to help them get some really beautiful, memorable photos out in this freezing weather.

So might be a little bit crazy, but let's go take some wedding photos out in the snow.

Okay, before following along on Josh and Sana's wedding photo session, let me briefly explain some important things to know about Japanese wedding trends and culture.

Let's start with one important statistic.

The average age that people get married in Japan has increased significantly over the past few decades.

Back in 1995, men typically married at around 28 and women at around 26.

By 2024, that number has risen to 31 for men and nearly 30 for women.

Also, about 60% of couples either had or plan to have a wedding ceremony at the same time, about one quarter of couples choose to not hold a ceremony.

In Japan, wedding photos took place only in a studio and were quite a serious affair.

Over time, it has become more popular to get out of the studio, away from the serious portraits, and

have more fun with it and sometimes get extreme.

Which is what brings us to our shooting location.

Shakotan is about an hour by car from the Otaru area.

Its coastline stretches for about 42km with dramatic cliffs, unique rock formations, and

the sea known as Shakotan Blue, which can be seen from Kamui Misaki.

The name Shakotan comes from the Ainu words shak meaning summer and kotan meaning village.

It's often called a summer town because of its stunning summer scenery.

But this time, we're here to discover a different side of Shakotan.

With only a population of around 1,700 people, Shakotan's main industry is fishing, with sea urchin being the town's specialty.

From sea urchin in June, salmon in autumn, and

cod in winter, fresh varieties of seafood can be caught and enjoyed throughout the year.

Now, with that context in mind, let's enjoy some delicious Shakotan seafood and introduce the lovely couple who'll be getting their photos taken.

It is the night before the crazy shoot, out in the snow.

I'm not even wearing like a wedding outfit.

So we're actually right now at Bikuni Kanko House, and we've received this beautiful meal.

There's heaps of different kinds of stuff, seafood, lots to try.

I guess the viewers then, they're not so familiar with.

And I don't know if you've been on camera together before or anything like that.

Like in my recent series that I do where I like, I make videos, she sometimes appears.

Sana really wanted to get married on 8 August, like 8.

This date will remind you for the rest of your life.

And so I had to come back from the volunteering.

The next day was when we handed in the papers.

And then I went back to volunteering the next day.

Yeah, he was like waving the paper like on the shrine, like saying our names and our parents names.

What do you find appealing about getting the photo's taken in Hokkaido in the snow?

Well, it's like, I feel like it's a once in a lifetime thing.

No one goes into the middle of the in the like minus 5, minus 10 degree weather to get wedding photos taken in a dress.

right now Sana and Josh are preparing, getting ready, hair and makeup, all that jazz.
