In today's lesson, we're gonna learn advanced English with three scenes from this magical movie which stars so many incredible actors like Anne Hathaway, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, who, by the way, you might remember from the Harry Potter films.

Alice is a young woman living in England in an 1800s who feels out of place in the world that expects her to follow strict rules and marry a man she does not love.

At a garden party where she's pressured to accept a proposal.

She runs away and follows a curious white rabbit into the woods and suddenly falls down a rabbit hole into this strange world of underling.

There she discovers that everyone seems to be expecting her.

They speak of a prophecy about a girl named Alice who will defeat a terrible creature called the Jabberwocky and end the Red Queen's reign.

Alice, however, is not so sure she's the one they're waiting for, or if any of this is even real.

Alright, so let's jump already into the first scene where we learn about the Alice prophecy.

The Oraculum being a calendrical compendium of Underland.

In this first scene, Alice has stumbled into Wonderland, where some local creatures discover her.

So they suspect she could be the legendary Alice from an ancient prophecy and decide to take her to Absalom, a wise caterpillar who acts as their oracle.

By the way, a caterpillar is this long little creature that crawls around and later transforms into a flying insect, like a butterfly or a moth.

Shall is a more formal way of saying will.

It's often used in legal documents or fantasy settings to sound more dramatic.

So the Oraculum is basically a calendar guide of everything that happened and will happen in Underland.

Frabjous being the day you slay the Jabberwocky.

Slay means to kill, usually in a violent or heroic way.

It's often used in fantasy stories about slaying dragons or monsters.

In modern slang, slay also means to do something extremely well.

Like the actors in this film slay with the quality of their acting.

Not hardly is a way of saying definitely not or absolutely not.

It's stronger than just saying, no, wait, this is my dream.

I'm going to wake up now and you'll all disappear.

Pinching means squeezing your skin between your fingers like this, usually to cause a little pain.

People often pinch themselves to check if they are dreaming.

If you say that something does a trick, you mean it works or solves a problem you're trying to fix?

It's a casual way to say something is effective.

For example, I was tired, but coffee did the trick.
