And today we're counting down our picks for the most puzzling criminal cases that had investigators stumped for extended periods of time and were only solved by a lucky break, unexpected clue or some other fateful discovery.

Hundreds of police cadets combed the woods, flyers with the boy's reconstructed image circulated far and wide, and

even psychics were consulted, all to no avail.

However, in 2022, utilizing advanced forensic genetic genealogy and DNA extracted from the boy's remains, authorities finally announced his Joseph Augustus Zarrilli, number 19.

It took just a few minutes to lift this rusted car out of Brulee Creek.

It's been resting in this area for more than 40 years.

But the process was grueling and investigators spent hours digging around the car and picking out what's inside, human remains and other items.

May 29, 1971, marked the beginning of a haunting mystery in Spearfish, South Dakota, when 17 year old friends Pamela Jackson and Cheryl Miller vanished while driving to a party in Jackson's beige 1960 Studebaker Lark.

In September 2013, a fisherman spotted a wheel protruding from low water in Brule Creek and excavators recovered the rusted Studebaker with skeletal remains inside.

It pumps 10,000 gallons of water out per minute, and

Forensic analysis confirmed the remains belonged to Jackson and Miller, and

Earlier leads, including a 2007 indictment of a man serving unrelated prison time, had collapsed when key confession evidence was proven false, all they were doing was going to a party and meeting, wanted to have a good time or something with their friends and hang out with friends and stuff and they just go missing.

Before she settled down into a job, Denise worked as a waitress and a part time sales assistant at Bloomingdale's.

She just said, dad, don't worry, I'm all right.

Huber was abducted in California after encountering a stranger while driving.

Her disappearance initially produced few leads and for years there was little indication of what had happened to her.

The night she left, she poked her head in the door and said, Diona and I, we were watching television, just with that lovely smile, you know.

The case broke open when investigators identified John Famolaro, a local man with a history of violent behavior.

Evidence showed that Famolaro had kidnapped Huber, murdered her and disposed of her body in an attempt to conceal the crime.

They were able to do the fingerprints and that's something I never even thought of.

I never imagined that we would have that kind of evidence after three years.

So you have this hole in, you know that in your, inside you, through your heart or whatever.

In 1997, Famolaro was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The conviction brought long delayed justice in a case that had once appeared destined to remain unresolved.

And it stands as a reminder of how seemingly ordinary encounters can turn fatal.

Now they have excruciating answers to the tragedy that has consumed their lives along with fresh grief, even after all this time.

This evening the New York City Police Department is announcing the arrest of Pedro Hernandez, age 51 of Maple Shade, New Jersey for the murder of Eton Paetz.

Six year old Etan Pates disappearance from a Soho street in New York City was among the first times a missing child's face was placed on milk cartons across the country, fundamentally changing how the nation approached cases like this.
