Regina, welcome to the awards tour podcast.

First of all, I'm just, like, so excited to talk to you at this point in your career.

I remember you got honored in Seattle and we had, like, incredible conversation there.

But I feel like you've been in 80 million movies since then and, like, so many other successes.

But talk about one battle after another and how PTA slipped you the script.

Well, yeah, I mean, you know, one day PTA said, I want to talk to you about something.

Basically, I'll speed it up and put it in a nutshell.

And I thought it was going to be about something I had to do to my yard.

And he came, and I was like, yeah, this and this.

I was kind of showing him, and he's like, okay, well, can we go back in?

And we went back in, and he said, I have a movie.

And I was like, wait a minute, you know, and

then he kind of told me what it was and what it was about, and

he's like, you know, when I'm all done, I'll give you the script when I just need to do a few more things.

And then I think a few months later, he sent me the script.

Because first of all, you're one of the very few people.

This is a man that keeps his projects pretty under wraps until they become a thing.

What did you feel when you first read it?

You know, I'm a big PTA fan, so for me, I read it.

And I thought, wow, I wonder what this will look like.

Because there was a lot of intersectionality in the characters.

What will it be when it actually becomes, like, a visceral thing?

So I was very excited to see, you know, what it was going to be, because if it was that on paper, I wanted to see what it was Going to be like.

And, you know, the characters and, you know, everybody that was going to be involved.

So, yeah, it was great to be there early.

So when you read it, and this is what I'll just get to it.

Did it read as black as it is when you first read it?

Like, everybody's like, y' all really, like, made him a minority on his own, which I really love.

You know, but at that point, I was like, okay, okay, for Fidia.

He was like, I'm thinking of Jungle Pussy, you know, Shane.

And then he's like, I love Wood Harris, you know, in the French 75.

That was certainly not an accident that it.

That the intention of that kind of strength came across in that film.

No, I mean, listen, there's a lot of it that feels like, you know, a madcap blaxploitation in certain ways, and

also a political thriller and also, like a feeling about family.

But the thing I really loved about it is there was a sisterhood of black women throughout generations, throughout levels that were sort of there.

And I just kind of think it's gotta be kind of cool to be on a Paul Thomas Anderson script and to have, again, from Jungle Pussy to yourself and Tiana and Chase and just everybody that contributed to this.

Did y' all feel that energy on set with it?

I think when we were shooting it, we definitely knew something was happening.

And I think that just had a lot to do with how.

I mean, we shot the French 75 stuff at the top, you know, So I think that kind of energy in the movie, which was like.

I had met Chase in character, but I had met Chase.

I hadn't met her as adult Willa on camera yet, because shooting all the stuff that happened up until the baby, and

So it was great to kind of have that feeling and that momentum of what that baby represented that by the Time we were actually working together.
