It's like a school's own Olympic Games, full of spectacle and competition.

We've done them for practically the last 10 years.

Today will be Sarah' last sports day in elementary school, so it's a touch emotional as well.

In preparation for the event, the students from first to sixth grade have already been divided evenly between red and white teams ready to compete.

But before anything happens, there must be warm ups and stretches.

This is something you see throughout Japanese culture, whether at school, in the workplace, or even with retired people in parks early in the morning, it always goes along with music and usually some smiles.

Once warm ups are done, then comes the team cheers.

Before individual events begin, each team does their own cheer, kind of like a haka, but

One side yells and the other side responds until they all cheer together like a duet at the same time.

But that's only the first part of the cheers.

We also have family at this school, and they are participating in third and first grade events.

Each grade does two things particular to that grade.

This is the sports event for Izzy's third grade class, and this is her classes presentation.

Red and white teams earn points for their team if they win their competition.

But presentations are not evaluated for points in elementary school, but in junior high sports day, they.

And if we were presenting baby Emma today, she would probably win an award.

While the third grade was competing, Joshua and two of his close friends were preparing to introduce the fourth graders in their performance to everyone.

Our kids still remember the dance that goes along with it.

The fourth graders scurried off the field like ninjas, while the sixth graders got ready for their turn.

The sixth graders break into four teams and do a relay race.

Each team winning points for either white or red.

Sarah was Green 7, so we kept our eyes open for her.

All right, Sarah, blue and red began to run away with the race.

But something was about to happen that would start the race all over again.

On the last lap, one of the kids didn't run at all.

Because of that, they decided to do something quite interesting.
