  • Former President Tsai Ing-wen was surprised to receive a Taiwan passport.

  • The founder of the空中英語教室, Peng Meng-hui, officially became a citizen of Taiwan last year.

  • But on the evening of August 6, news of his passing spread that he was 98 years old.

  • Tsai Ing-wen also posted a picture of his passing on social media.

  • The two of them took a picture together.

  • This April was the last time he met Peng Meng-hui.

  • Every time he met him, he would say,

  • I often pray for you.

  • Thank you, Peng Meng-hui, for always bringing me a lot of warmth and encouragement when I encounter difficulties and challenges.

  • I sincerely pray that Taiwan will always be your home.

  • I've always felt like I'm a Taiwanese anyway, but now I'm a full-fledged citizen.

  • So I can even do more to help you.

  • Peng Meng-hui founded the空中英語教室 in 1962.

  • It is a common memory for many Taiwanese to learn English.

  • President Tsai also said that Peng Meng-hui's dedication to Taiwan is an inspiring educator.

  • He sincerely thanked the teacher for the past few decades for being determined to speak up for Taiwan internationally and bring positive and good energy to society.

  • Wow! Welcome, teacher, to become a citizen of Taipei.

  • He also personally issued an ID card to Peng Meng-hui last year.

  • The mayor of Taipei, Chiang Wai-an,

  • Wen-shun, also expressed his deep sadness.

  • I was very honored to issue an ID card to Peng Meng-hui last year.

  • He is also a proud Taipei citizen.

  • We are very, very sad for his departure.

  • Peng Meng-hui, as a Taiwanese, walked the last mile of his life.

  • His spirit will forever live in the hearts of Taiwanese.

  • This is an interview with Taipei Daily.

  • Today is a very important day.

  • Mr. Peng's school district is planning a class ceremony.

  • These foreigners who have made special contributions can retain their original nationality and become citizens of the Republic of China.

  • In Taiwan,

  • Mr. Peng, who is in Taiwan and the international community, has also recently obtained permission from the Ministry of the Interior.

  • Under everyone's witness, we would like to warmly welcome Mr. Peng to officially join our Taipei-style big family.

  • OK. Today, we can say that it is a gathering of distinguished guests.

  • The attendance of many distinguished guests can make our entire event more complete.

  • First of all, let's welcome

  • Director of the Ministry of the Interior, Lin Ching-chi.

  • OK. Thank you, Director.

  • OK. Our Taipei-style big family,

  • Mayor Chiang Wai-an.

  • Hello, Mayor.

  • And today's star, our most beautiful and wisest,

  • Mr. Peng Meng-hui.

  • And the Director of the Civil Affairs Bureau, Chen Yong-de.

  • Hello, Director.

  • And our Christian, the Chairman of the Broadcasting Association, Hong Shan-chun.

  • Hello, Chairman.

  • Thank you.

  • Under everyone's witness, we are going to have a very important ceremony.

  • Mr. Peng, and our Mayor Chiang, and Director Chen, and the media lady.

  • I am very happy today to thank Mr. Peng on behalf of all of us.

  • Especially Mr. Peng, who came to Taiwan in the 40th year of the Republic of China, when he was in his early 20s.

  • He came to Taiwan in his early 20s.

  • I just talked to him.

  • When he came to Taiwan in the 40th year of the Republic of China, he stayed in Hualien for 7 years.

  • Then he stayed in Taichung for 2 years.

  • Then he came to Taipei in the 19th year of the Republic of China.

  • When he came to Taipei, basically, in the 51st year of the Republic of China, he started our course on the English classroom in the air.

  • In this regard, it is a great contribution to the development of English in Taiwan.

  • To put it simply,

  • Mr. Peng was in the Republic of China.

  • I just talked about it.

  • In the 51st year of the Republic of China, when he started to create the English classroom, in the 71st year of the Republic of China, he won the National Good Teacher Award.

  • At the same time, he also won the Special Award for the best teacher in our education.

  • In addition, in the Republic of China in 1986, he also won the GEO religious person recognized by the Ministry of the Interior.

  • So, Mr. Peng's spread of Buddhism and his teaching in the United States actually contributed a lot to Taiwan.

  • Just now, our host mentioned that in the 105th year of the National GEO, in fact, we had discussed with Mr. Peng to see if Mr. Peng wanted to use the letter.

  • Mr. Peng was very polite at that time.

  • He felt embarrassed to send a letter, so he didn't accept it.

  • But we have always been happy.

  • Finally, recently,

  • Mr. Peng agreed to plan the National Good Teacher Award.

  • In fact, we are grateful to Mr. Peng for his contribution in this.

  • Especially, as I just said, from the 1940s to the present, for more than 70 years, in this piece of land in Taiwan, as Mr. Peng said, when Taiwan withdrew from the UN, he was in Taiwan.

  • When the 921 earthquake happened, he was in Taiwan.

  • He is a Taiwanese.

  • Indeed, he contributed a lot to this piece of land.

  • So, here, the Ministry of the Interior expressed our gratitude on behalf of all the citizens.

  • With the highest level, with the highest effort, we express our gratitude to Mr. Peng.

  • Here, we thank you all.

  • Then, let's invite the director to give us the microphone.

  • Then, let's invite the director to say a few words to everyone.

  • Director Lin, Director Chen, and all our partners today.

  • Hello.

  • Hello.

  • I am very, very happy to be here today to personally hand over the ID card of the Republic of China to Mr. Peng.

  • In addition to congratulating Mr. Peng for officially becoming a citizen of Taipei,

  • I think more importantly,

  • I want to thank Mr. Peng for almost devoting his life to this piece of land in Taiwan.

  • Just now, Director Lin mentioned that during the war,

  • Mr. Peng came to Taiwan from time to time, first in Hualien, Pianxiang, and then served in Taitung.

  • He moved to Taipei in 1949.

  • I think Mr. Peng loves Taiwan very much in his life.

  • He especially hopes to be able to take care of many disadvantaged children.

  • So, we are very, very touched by this heart.

  • He also witnessed the entire history of Taiwan.

  • After Mr. Peng came to Taiwan, he found that many foreigners came to Taiwan one after another.

  • So, he also deeply understood that language is a very important communication channel.

  • So, he planned a plan to learn relevant languages.

  • In 1951, he founded the Aerial English Classroom.

  • So, many friends, including myself, grew up learning Aerial English Classroom.

  • When I was in high school,

  • I was able to watch the Aerial English Classroom and listen to Mr. Peng's voice.

  • In fact, it laid the foundation for my later English.

  • I am very grateful to Mr. Peng.

  • Mr. Peng is also very difficult.

  • He loves music.

  • Last time I came to record with Mr. Peng, he performed on the spot.

  • Little horn.

  • It's not easy.

  • Mr. Peng is already 96 years old.

  • And he came to Taiwan for 72 years.

  • Almost three-fourths of his life is dedicated to Taiwan.

  • And he also loves the ocean.

  • He also learned to dive.

  • In addition, he also founded

  • Taiwan's first voice-over TV program,

  • Tianyun Singing.

  • And he also founded

  • Taiwan's first full-time Chinese voice-over choir,

  • Tianyun Choir.

  • Not only does it spread the福音 to all corners of Taiwan, but also let the world see Taiwan through music.

  • So today,

  • I am very fortunate to be able to participate in this historic moment.

  • Congratulations.

  • Mr. Peng also believes that in the future,

  • Mr. Peng can continue to spread this love to every corner of Taiwan.
