  • What is Monolatry?

  • Monolatry, also known as henotheism, is  the religious practice of worshiping one

  • god without denying the existence of other gods.

  • Unlike monotheism, which asserts  the existence of only one deity,

  • monolatry acknowledges a broader pantheon of  deities but chooses to worship just one. This

  • form of religious belief is commonly found  in several ancient near eastern cultures.

  • A well-known example is the  ancient Hebrew religion,

  • where the God of Israel, Yahwehwas worshiped above all other gods.

  • Some scholars argue that this form of monolatry  eventually transitioned into monotheism.

  • Monolatry is a valuable concept in  the study of religion as it provides

  • a more nuanced understanding of how different  cultures perceive and engage with the divine.
