is a theory about how people experience God in  evangelical Christianity. It states that people  

who are more prone to absorption, or the ability  to become deeply engrossed in their thoughts  

and feelings, are more likely to have intense  spiritual experiences. This theory was proposed  

by T.M. Luhrmann, an American anthropologist known  for her studies of modern-day witches, charismatic  

Christians, and psychiatrists. Luhrmann's research  found that people who were more absorbed were more  

likely to report having vivid mental images, a  heightened sense of focus, and unusual spiritual  

experiences, such as feeling the presence of God  or hearing God's voice. She also found that the  

more people prayed, the more likely they were to  have these experiences. The Absorption Hypothesis  

posits that enhancing attentional focus and  immersion in thoughts can foster intense spiritual  

experiences, whose interpretation is significantly  influenced by individual spirituality and faith.
