  • Several types of fish, such as Sarpa salpa, are  believed to have hallucinogenic effects when  

  • eaten, potentially causing experiences similar  to deliriants rather than LSD-like psychedelics  

  • as rumors had it. Ichthyoallyeinotoxism, a  rare form of food poisoning, occurs after  

  • consuming such fish and is characterized  by central nervous system disturbances,  

  • including hallucinations and nightmares. One man  on the French Riviera after eating a Sarpa salpa  

  • felt nauseous and had blurred vision, muscle  weakness, and vomiting. While driving,  

  • he was distracted by vivid hallucinations of  enormous, shrieking arthropods. Another man,  

  • aged 90, hallucinated screaming humans and  squawking birds after consuming the fish. He  

  • had terrifying nightmares for two more nightsfearing he was developing a mental disorder.  

  • Based on these accounts, a Sarpa salpa trip  doesn't seem to be a pleasant way to get high.
