  • this is Hiroshi Fujiwara, he went from being homeless to Japan's top pet detective and he allowed me to spend two weeks shadowing him and his team.

  • And so here's the story of Japan's real life pet detective.

  • So I just arrived, it seems like a local cat has gone missing.

  • I have no idea what we're in store for today, but I do have a lot of questions and enter Mr Fujiwara along with his teammate, Mr Oyama.

  • They started by gathering detailed information about both the surrounding area and Elsa or um, as her owner, Mrs Osama calls her.

  • They moved impressively fast prepping motion sensor cameras and surveying the area around Jose Tomasson's house home literally built for cats.

  • A nearly overwhelming number of cats.

  • Very cute cats, but a lot of them.

  • But then shortly after kicking off, Fujiwara san received a phone call and asked me if I would like to come with him.

  • There was another case and so we hopped in the car and left the area of Kanagawa heading for chiba leaving behind toy amazon to take the lead and help out the very distraught.

  • Mrs Yoshiyama still not there.

  • It's As we drove, Fujiwara sans phone was going off every 3-5 minutes with phone calls.

  • I stopped counting somewhere around the 18th call and in the process I got my first real peak of just how difficult following a pet detective was going to be anymore.

  • So that um, thank you.

  • All the tools and tips started coming out.

  • Every animal has quirks that make them slightly easier to search for and find cats for example.

  • Typically not only keep to a shockingly small territory but are nearsighted and so they prefer to walk narrow alleyways with walls on either one or for both sides as it makes them feel more protected and are likely to be found in the direct vicinity of their home.

  • Also hiding out in small tight spaces helps them to gain a greater sense of control over their limited surroundings.

  • That would be a lot call carl starting to get dark.

  • But everybody seems really confident that tonight is gonna be the night that we find and catch Elsa everything set up.

  • All the traps are set and at this point we just play the waiting game.

  • So fingers.

  • Okay.

  • Yeah, she she looks like mad stop coming to confide in With disappointment in the air to Amazon started teaching Hoshi Amazon how to manage the traps.

  • Owner involvement is often a big part of the process.

  • In fact Fujiwara San and his team even have a remote service where they send the owners the tools and provide training to help them locate or find their pets with a success rate of nearly 70%.

  • I watched him take several of these meetings while we drove the previous night.

  • Each heavily customized on the pet and its situation.

  • But this was different toy amazon had just seen Elsa the night before.

  • So the equal mm A brief moment.

  • The third member of the squad.

  • Mr A former human detective of 20 years turned pet detective after losing his own cat and hiring Fujiwara san to find it inspired by what he learned along the way, he changed careers.

  • The team does do much more than just cats by the way, everything from lizards, snakes, turtles all the way to birds and specialized beetles.

  • There were just a lot of cats missing during this time and while our time together was limited, it was still an amazing learning experience, spent the majority of this particular day just laying groundwork.

  • Not every day in the life of a pet detective is an action packed rush, but at the same time some days are So this evening we got a break in the weather and I got a call saying that they were heading out there that they got some more info.

  • They might have seen Elsa.

  • I'm on my way now in the hopes that by the time I get there they may have even caught Elsa and returned her to her owner.

  • So I'm about five minutes away now and I just got another call saying that they've cornered Elsa and they're just waiting to actually catch her.

  • But the entire ride here has basically been a one way parking lot.

  • We're at the finish line of this Elsa journey and I can just feel the excitement.

  • Yeah.

  • I'm gonna do this when you hate that.

  • They're not the skin much more you got.

  • Yeah.

  • Yeah.
