  • The 2022 campaign is over.

  • Let the 2024 campaign begin for months now.

  • Donald trump has been itching to jump into the next presidential campaign.

  • He finally scratched that itch in mid november, formally declaring his candidacy for the 2024 race in order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States.

  • No one should be happier about that than Ron DeSantis.

  • The florida governor is widely expected to run for the Republican presidential nomination, but unlike trump, he's showing no signs of urgency to enter the race anytime soon.

  • I mean, seriously, we just ran an election.

  • We have this Georgia runoff coming, which is very important for republicans to win that Georgia runoff, which is a perfect strategy for de Santis to take and one that makes trump look a needy and be more focused on himself than focused on what's good for the republican party.

  • Let's think about all this from de Santis perspective, he just cruised and I mean, cruise to a second term as governor of florida, winning by a stunning 19 points.

  • It was without question, the best moment for rip republicans in an election that was, as a whole, pretty disappointing for the party.

  • It was not so bright in many other parts of the country.

  • It was, it was, it was a substandard performance, given the dynamics that are at play.

  • De Santis is already well known nationally and his sweeping victory only raises that profile in short, the santos is right where he wants to be and he wants to revel in it at least for a little while now trump, on the other hand, looks a bit well desperate despite some of his allies advising him To wait to launch his presidential campaign, at least until after the December six Senate runoff in Georgia Trump decided he needed to get in the race immediately, which candidly makes him look a little bit weak, especially when you consider that Trump is already being blamed for much of the fact that Republicans fell short of expectations during the midterm elections.

  • Now, even before Trump formally into the race, he was clearly very aware of and nervous about the prospect of a de Santis candidacy.

  • I would tell you things about him that won't be very flattering.

  • I know more about him than anybody other than perhaps his wife trump said up to santa's on election Day.

  • He has also taken referring to the governor as Ron the sanctimonious, see it's his last name, but just changed which is all of course, vintage trump.

  • But the more the scientist looks to be above the fray, the more magnanimous and presidential he looks, he looks more like the front runner making decisions on his own terms rather than reacting to every move that trump makes, which would mark a major departure from the 2016 republican presidential primary, when candidates allowed trump to do the terms and the pace of the race constantly reacting to his latest attack or tweet de Santis when asked about trump's comments, dismissed the attacks he's faced more broadly.

  • All that's just noise.

  • I would just tell people to go check out the scoreboard from last Tuesday night.

  • What this early maneuvering suggests is that the Santis is going to run a far different campaign Than those waged by Republicans who fought and lost to Trump in the 2016 election.

  • He won't be rushed into the race by Trump and will do his best to avoid getting down in the mud at least at the start with the former president.

  • Given how little success past candidates had in trying to out Trump Trump seems to me like that's a pretty worthwhile strategy and that is the point.
