  • - When I saw this position though, I was like, "man,

  • "this is really good."

  • It fit everything.

  • Like this would be an awesome place to work.

  • - [Interviewer] So what happened?

  • - They filled it.

  • - Not only has he long ago paid his debt to society

  • but he continues to work on himself.

  • (soft music)

  • - I want to be proud of myself.

  • I'm Roel Villamayor, unemployed but not unemployable.

  • - It's a simple profound truth,

  • you can't achieve your goals

  • if you don't know what they are.

  • The starting point for any discussion about goal setting

  • is understanding what's most important to you.

  • - Me becoming a drug and alcohol counselor

  • was something that happened

  • after being a part of different self-help groups in prison.

  • If I'm making a better world in here then

  • I'm doing something.

  • That's what I want to do when I go home,

  • why not do it here?

  • When I first came home, I didn't know how to order food,

  • didn't know how to cross the street,

  • didn't know what I had permission to do

  • and these guys had to keep telling me like,

  • "you're not in prison."

  • (soft music)

  • - I think one thing that Roel really wanted to do

  • is really find his purpose.

  • You know, coming from a formerly incarcerated background

  • you leave not knowing what to do,

  • not knowing where you fit now in this new world.

  • And oftentimes understanding your purpose

  • and understanding where you go

  • and where you're going to be successful is hard for folks.

  • - It's not if I feel that LinkedIn Learning

  • will be used and if I find a benefit,

  • I already find a benefit in it.

  • I use LinkedIn Learning because it's like,

  • okay, where am I going to find professional information

  • to help me deal with my professional growth?

  • Where I'm at right now with my job search

  • is accepting the jobs that are coming across my table

  • and that goes against what I'm trying to achieve here.

  • - Getting clear on what matters to you

  • and understanding where you need to spend your time

  • in order to operationalize those values

  • is the first step in setting and achieving effective goals.

  • - I need to define my professional goals

  • instead of just being there

  • just kind of like having a lackadaisical approach.

  • I need to know whether or not

  • I'm still bringing some of my old prison ways into it.

  • When Dorie talks, it's easy to listen to.

  • Her course has helped me figure out my next move.

  • I want a career where I can use my favorite experiences

  • from previous jobs.

  • I think that becoming a drug and alcohol counselor

  • in prison was the right thing.

  • It ended up being one of the most positive experiences

  • I've ever been part of, it was life changing.

  • (soft music)

  • So I applied for another job.

  • I can get excited about a job, you know,

  • and this one I'm really excited about.

  • It's the program that taught me

  • to become a drug and alcohol counselor

  • and I would actually be supporting

  • the expansion of that program.

  • Feels like it hits all the points and it gets to touch home.

  • I really hope to get an interview for this job.

  • It sounds exactly like what I've been looking for.
