  • This is how a human body is composted.

  • The body is first washed and put in biodegradable clothing.

  • It's then laid to rest in a vessel on a bed of alfalfa, sawdust, and straw where it stays

  • for 30 days.

  • Oxygen-starved microbes begin to eat the organic matter aka the body.

  • And here’s a wild fact, the enzymes present in the gut during life, basically consume

  • the body after death.

  • The microbes create a number of byproducts like gases and liquids like phosphorus, nitrogen,

  • and potassium.

  • And once they're finished, only the bones and teeth remain as they're then broken down

  • by a machine into small pieces.

  • So that over the next 30 days, they too can be eaten by all the little microbes.

  • Now, at the end of the whole process, the family of the departed gets about 400 pounds

  • of soil to use how they like.

  • The official name for human composting is Natural Organic Reduction.

  • And right now, only a handful of states offer this option, with California being the latest

  • to legalize it.

  • Would you want to be composted?
