  • Today we are at Kappabashi Dori

  • It's a famous street full of houseware thingslike kitchen stuff!

  • So some of you recommended it and we are checking it out today!

  • Oh boy!

  • [Life in Japan Theme Song]

  • One of the great things about where we live is how easily we can get to Tokyo and its many wards via the Odakyu train line.

  • Today we're going to the far side of Tokyo, near Tokyo SkyTree,

  • We've heard about a street that sells anything and everything you need for the kitchen.

  • We haven't ever been there before, so I'm excited to see how Ruth will respond,

  • and a bit curious about how much she might spend.

  • That's cool! Look at all those cups on that buildingthe chef up there. They are ready for us.

  • They are ready! And I am ready!

  • Ruth's like "Let me at 'em!"

  • If I had more space, I would buy them because they're beautiful! And I love hot pot.

  • Oh my goodness, there's so many amazing things!

  • It's all wood, and I love wood stuff.

  • Oh man, I could use a new...Oh man!

  • I don't need this stuff, but I want this stuff.

  • I wonder if you'll end up buying something and what you will buy.

  • Oh, I will buy!

  • Don't touch. Don't touch, watch the bags!

  • So cool! This is a lunch plate!

  • Oh my goodness!

  • Look, it's a boat!

  • This is all paper crafts for cakes and stuff.

  • Oh, we're going in here!

  • This is awesome stuff for the coffee shop, you know? I know!

  • Very cool.

  • What kind of stuff do they have here?

  • They have all the molds for making cakes and chocolates, and for packaging them for selling them.

  • They have all the plastic molds, which are amazing. That's cool.

  • And all the packaging, like all the paper-wrapping stuff and cup-cakey things.

  • I mean, look, I could make a mini-cheesecakes in this and put a swirl on top with a lemon and still fit a lid!

  • Yakiniku! Very cool! Oh my.

  • For your own little Yakiniku place. Oh man, Yakiniku and all kinds of awesome stuff!

  • Great! Really interesting.

  • The more stores we enter, the more we can see how each store has it's own speciality or niche.

  • Yes, you see lots of the same things thought the many stores,

  • but almost all the stores are centered around a theme or service.

  • Just when you thought you've seen it all, something unique comes along.

  • Get your signs! Oh, very cool.

  • Uh oh! Oh my freaky freaky!

  • Ruth found cookie-cutters. I want this one for next Christmas!

  • It cuts out, and you put it together like a puzzle!

  • I'm buying this.

  • Oh boy, look, it's just... Heaven!

  • OK Ruth, she got her first purchase

  • I did - at a knife shop.

  • But it was a cookie-cutter at a knife shop.

  • Oh, these are plastic.

  • Ruth's like "we got to keep an eye on the time because it just might get away."

  • Kitchen world!

  • This is like "Washyoku" — for Japanese kind of dishes.

  • I want these. Oh yes!

  • What are you looking for? A bowl.

  • Look at all of this though, wow. But I want a bowl that matches this or this.

  • I think you can probably find it here.

  • Wouldn't that be a pretty solid bowl? Yeah, that is pretty. Very cool.

  • It will go good with my white. It does white and blue.

  • The choice is yourswhat do you get? Oh my goodness!

  • I wonder if these can go in the microwave?

  • I kind of like this, huh?

  • That and that.

  • What would I serve on this? Carrot sticks?

  • I could serve fish on this Yeah

  • Oh, this is so pretty.

  • A beautiful bowl and plate, and Ruth has found her next purchase.

  • Now what did we get?

  • Well I got some beautiful bowls... How much did it run you?

  • Well one bowl and one tray... Oh yes, very nice.

  • It ran me ¥3,000

  • Little did we know, we were about to discover one of Ruth's favorite stores.

  • Cake supplies, cake supplies! Oh my goodness, cake supplies.

  • I really want one of these, but I want a little bigger mold.

  • Which one? Oh my goodness, Ruth!

  • Oh!

  • They have the Easter Bunny. I'm going to wait, just wait. I'm not sure about that yet.

  • Oh my goodness, look at this!

  • Oh my goodness.

  • This is like torture! It's torture?!

  • For icing...

  • A pizza cutter, very important for the Reutter family.

  • I'm getting a pizza cutter, frosting bags and a silicone little ball mold.

  • Nice. Nice.

  • Cross? Cross.

  • There's a whole other side of the road that we haven't seen yet!

  • Well...

  • Well I could spend hours upon hours And hundreds of dollars!

  • And hundreds!

  • There's where you were... just in there.

  • And now back over here.

  • All the plastic food that they show in the windows!

  • You can bring yours in and have it made like it.

  • That's right. Or you just find something like what you want to sell.

  • I need to register my presence here, otherwise you won't know that I was actually with you.

  • So you think I should bring my mom here?

  • Oh definitely.

  • Joanne loves little bowls. My mom does love little bowls.

  • There's some beautiful bowls... Oh look at that one.

  • I got one though that I really like.

  • I like that one. Oh! Beautiful.

  • I love that Tokyo, and other places in Japan, have entire streets and areas dedicated to one particular thing,

  • just like Kappabashi Dori is for kitchenware.

  • In a world where so much is done online, it's refreshing to be able to shop little stores and find unique things.

  • OK- so they havejust look at those little bento boxes!!

  • I'm about to buy one just to have one!

  • It's a rice bowl on the head! So cool.

  • Oh, I might need to. Should I just buy one? Just do it? Sure.

  • This looks just like Ruth's style here, this store.

  • Sometimes I want a tiny little... Ice cream scoop?

  • Yeah, but I use them for cupcake dough.

  • Save some money to get home! I charged my PASMO before we came.

  • We're literally window shoppingthat's what was in the window.

  • Oh, it's got it's own strap!

  • I'm going to get the bigger one.

  • There we go.

  • Time for the next purchase.

  • Well, more purchases in that bag!

  • Good thing I brought my large Life in Japan bag!

  • I'll take this one. It's full, oh my!

  • Bag 2!

  • Oh my goodness! Oh boy, we didn't even make it one store past...

  • Bullet train trays

  • Can you imagine if I had a set of those and whenever the little nieces and nephews came over, I fed them on that!?

  • They would want to eat at my house everyday.

  • If they weren't so expensive—I wonder if you can put ice inside of it?

  • So what did you think there?

  • Oh my goodness, I could have spent hours and hours and hours

  • But it's probably a good thing that I have to pick Joshua up from school

  • Because otherwise we would just be here until nightfall.

  • How much do you think you spent?

  • Probably ¥15,000.

  • ¥15,000 — we'll see when we get home. About.

  • I bought a lot of stuff! Look what Mommy got today!

  • A lot of stuff, Dude!

  • Add up the total... Those two are almost exactly the same cost.

  • Ah! Just a little over ¥10,000! Just that, huh?

  • I should have shopped some more! Oh boy!

  • Well now I know what I can go back and do. You did done good!
