One theory from a neurological perspective is that every single time you have a new experience, your brain is firing and using and creating more neurons so that it can record as much detail as possible.

Think about a hike when you first are walking on a hike, it always feels like it is taking longer.

Then when you turn around and walk back the way you came.

That's because when you're walking back it is no longer novel and therefore it goes by faster.

And as you age, you have fewer truly new experiences.

And this lack of stimulation has been shown to speed up your perception of time.
