  • Oh, what do you have here Sarah? A lizard book.

  • A lizard book?

  • Oh my goodness!

  • It's a reptile book.

  • A reptile book, all in Japanese! You got this, Sarah!

  • [Life in Japan Theme Song]

  • Sarah, what did you just get?

  • It's a big bug box!

  • It's a big bug box?!

  • Are we going to go out and look for bugs and different things to capture?

  • Yes!

  • Oh my goodness, OK!

  • Sarah has been super interested in reptiles and bugs recently,

  • so we're on a hunt to see what we can find.

  • Alright guys, are we ready?

  • To find some bugs?!

  • We're going to find some bugs, maybe some frogs.

  • See what we can find.

  • Oh that's a long ways down! Whoa, look at that, guys.

  • Our explorations start at a nearby stream that could possibly be good for finding bugs and such.

  • Oo la la.

  • This is pretty in here, isn't it?

  • Look at that, wow!

  • Look at over here too.

  • That's pretty incredible.

  • We've come to Todoroki Valley, I've been here before, but the family's never been here.

  • But we're keeping an eye open just for little bugs,

  • Or frogs or anything we might come across while we're down here.

  • Oh wow, look at that bridge.

  • Whoa, look at this! There's a big road up there, isn't there?

  • Oh yea, a pizza and pasta place up there somewhere

  • Wow, this is wild.

  • Oh Sarah, that does look awful like wild area, huh?

  • Frogs and things and stuff there maybe?

  • Maybe some

  • Some bamboo

  • It's pretty down here, but no bugs or frogs or anything like that to find so far.

  • And tons of spiders! Oh my goodness, if only you wanted to catch spiders.

  • The valley was certainly not the right place for the hunt, so we needed to expand our options.

  • OK, let's see if we can find something, Sarah.

  • We're going to go this way. See if we can find something this way, OK?

  • I think there might be something.

  • Do we see anything here? Any butterflies or anything at all?

  • Any moths? Anything flying around?

  • We're going to have to go somewhere else to look, huh?

  • The search will continue.

  • Oh oh! There's something!

  • What do you have to say, Sarah, if you want the butterfly to stop for a moment?

  • Butterfly, wait please!

  • Oh, yea, now there's some more bugs and stuff here, aren't there?

  • There's a butterfly over there.

  • Oh, there sure are! Look, this is where they like it.

  • OK, now we found some stuff.

  • Because there's flowers.

  • Yea, 'cause there's flowers here.

  • That's right, they like all these flowers.

  • Is it a bee? Did I just make it mad?

  • Momma caught something! Is it a bee?!

  • I don't think it's a bee, is it?

  • The butt looked like a bee.

  • Momma chan wasn't sure. Maybe she got a bee.

  • Maybe.

  • As long as it doesn't "bee" mad at me.

  • Look, there might be water down here.

  • Sarah would love to find a frog.

  • There's water for sure, but you know what?

  • I don't even hear a frog.

  • And you wouldn't want to go in this water here.

  • There's bugs on the water, that's for sure, look at those guys.

  • They're good at walking on water.

  • Yea, the bugs can walk on the water, can't they?

  • That's a pretty cool trick.

  • We started to consider that perhaps our timing was not the best

  • not only did we have to find a better place to go hunting but also a better time.

  • What a cool view up here, huh Dude?

  • Come over here. Come over here? Yea, let's go!

  • Whoa, you can see a long ways.

  • The hunt would move on.

  • Finding frogs in a different place!

  • We came to a different place along the Tama River, I think we'll have a lot better luck here.

  • No running.

  • Oh yea, there's a little creek down there.

  • How about that water there? Ew!

  • All ready for whatever Sarah finds? I am.

  • Sarah, you are already to find something, huh honey?

  • I hope you find something.

  • OK, this is the area we have chosen to go explore, right Sarah?

  • It's nasty water.

  • So let's go explore and see what we can find.

  • Frogs.

  • I'm going to go collect flowers.

  • The things we don't do for our kids!

  • Right here, come right here and then step right there, big step.

  • Now Sarah, let's listen. Do we hear anything other than that noisy bird up there?

  • Bird, wherever you are, go away and tweet.

  • I'm trying to find a frog and you're scaring it away

  • I made it!

  • Joshua found some solid land!

  • Careful Dude!

  • Don't fall in there!

  • Why? Because I'm not close enough to save you.

  • Once again, our big expectations were met with a harsh dose of reality.

  • The only wildlife we could find were some colorful wildflowers and noisy birds alerting everyone of our presence.

  • Look, I found a little place where we can cross the swamp.

  • And then we can go over and maybe see [something] in that island over there, ok?

  • Let's go see.

  • I see a dragonfly! Do you want to try to get a dragonfly?

  • No thank you. No?!

  • Do you see him? Yea, I do.

  • You don't want to try to get him?

  • It's good practice. Get close enough to get him, ok?

  • Wha! Oh, he jumped!

  • Where'd he go?

  • He went over there. He went over there?

  • Jump across to the other side.

  • Good job! OK, now you Big J.

  • Now you got to keep your eyes open for stuff.

  • And get ready to grab something in the air if it goes.

  • Well, all we found was a dragonfly

  • So we're going to go down much closer to our house

  • And go to a place under the bridge where we hope maybe is a great place to find some frogs

  • Or something, a lizard or something that Sarah will be happy to find.

  • Well, here goes attempt number three.

  • Sarah, I think everyone is rooting for you to find something.

  • What would you most like to find? A frog.

  • Second best would be? A lizard.

  • We saw a butterfly, there it is! Oh! Did you get it?

  • Almost. That was close, Dude.

  • OK! There's a bug right there in front.

  • Oh, there goes the romance car.

  • Do you remember when we went to Hakone on it?

  • I think people might have to wait for the next episode to see you catch something.

  • Well, we are going to have to do some more research to see where to catch frogs.

  • Is this where we go through?

  • I think we can go up right through here.

  • Let Daddy go first! Yea, that's right.

  • Scary!

  • Wait for me, Daddy! Go go go!

  • Oh look!

  • Daddy brought us out — perfect!

  • If anyone knows the best place to find frogs in Japan, tell us!

  • There's one more place I think we should check where I've heard tons of frogs before

  • And that was at a local park

  • Ne Sarah? I think that's where we need to go to find them.

  • In the morning, early, when they're all croaking!

  • I think the real winner today was Momma chan with her wildflowers!

  • Yes, I did get it.

  • A few days later...

  • Alright, we just heard that Uncle Ben and Izzy are catching crawfish

  • So we can go and hopefully catch some!

  • Yes!

  • Yeah, we'll cut the string, I'll tie it on here

  • And then we'll tie a piece of squid onto the other end of this rope

  • Did you catch a baby? Yeah.

  • And then you put it in the water and you try to catch zarigani.

  • Japanese for "crawfish."

  • So Sarah can you take that scissors and cut right here

  • [Yelling]

  • There's a zarigani over there?!

  • Did you get one on the line?

  • There's one on the line. Can you see it? Oh my goodness!

  • Izzy's going to pull the squid back out and I'm going to try to get it with a net.

  • The small ones are fast though.

  • Man, I'm going to go right here.

  • I'm going to come up from behind it.

  • Oh, it sees my net. Oh! It's back away!

  • They don't go in the net all by themselves.

  • OK, it went back in the hole. Oh!

  • So what's the process here? What do you do?

  • These are just chopsticks

  • We tie the string onto it

  • And then we'll tie, on the other end, a piece of squid

  • Oh!

  • The zarigani love the squid.

  • There you go Sarah!

  • That's it. You just needed a professional to help out.

  • I hope and pray we get one.

  • You already got one.

  • Yeah, but... Yeah, you've had some success already, huh?

  • I want you to get one.

  • It actually smells pretty good.

  • Have you had some as a snack? I have not had any

  • But it smells good.

  • You want to smell it?

  • Mmmmm.

  • It smells like beef jerky! Ha ha! Squid jerky.

  • Sarah, what did you catch?

  • I caught Ebi (shrimp).

  • Ebi! You got some ebi!

  • Awesome! OK, well that's a good start.

  • We got a fishing pole — a handmade fishing pole

  • OK I'm just gonna put it over here... And some nets...

  • Dude, this is just a whole hunting party here.

  • Izzy, how many have you got here so far?

  • Two. Have you got a bunch? Two?!

  • I got two too.

  • Whoa, the train goes right by, look at that!

  • Whoa!

  • Whoa, careful Joshua, don't fall in!

  • He's already having so much fun!

  • Look it! Look at that big guy right down in there.

  • Look at that big one!

  • Izzy, where's are net?

  • There's a big guy right down there.

  • Oh! Almost got him! Oh, that was so close!

  • Almost got him!

  • You got the squid!

  • You go the squid! You got the bait!

  • Look at the size of the one they caught right before we got here, my goodness!

  • That dude is like the dude right there.

  • Eventually, all of our patience and perseverance would pay off.

  • There would be a happy ending to the episode after all.

  • [Cheering] We got it!!

  • We got it! Let's see!

  • We finally got one! We got one!

  • Wow! Holy cow!

  • Alright! That's a decent sized dude.

  • Wow! Oh Dude, that was awesome!

  • Now he's digging in!

  • Finally caught on film!

  • Way to go Uncle Ben! Save the day!

  • crawfish friends?

  • Not friends Look — baby, kid, mommy and daddy fighting.

  • Good job Izzy!

  • Good job Izzy, way to go!

  • High five!

  • Getting some water. We got to hydrate after that one, huh?

  • It wasn't a frog or a lizard, but catching a zarigani sure felt good!

  • Well and they think we got another one. A smaller one?

  • A big one?

  • Is it there still Izzy? We don't know.

  • We don't know yet?

  • Right now I'm eating squid though.

  • Now you're eating the squid? You're eating the bait?!

  • Ane me. And you?!

  • Good job, thank you Uncle Ben.

  • Oh my goodness! What a cutie-pie.

  • Are you going to let him go back? Is that what you're going to do?

  • OK, let's see.

  • You're letting him go.

  • Go!

  • Born Free...

  • OK, I want to try to catch it.

  • Yea, we finally did it!

  • Thanks for watching, liking and subscribing.

  • We'll see you on the next Life in Japan, bye bye!

Oh, what do you have here Sarah? A lizard book.
