  • This is the real reason why ships are read below the waterline.

  • The answer goes back a very long time.

  • Today, massive ships of steel are relatively new, and before the 19th century, most ships were made of wood that made them vulnerable to hitch hikers from the sea, including barnacles, seaweed and, worst of all, wood eating worms that could cause leaks.

  • So the bottom of the ships were painted with copper paint, adding a protective layer, and the copper gave the paint a distinct red color.

This is the real reason why ships are read below the waterline.
