  • Here are the insane reasons planes won't fly over Tibet!

  • It's got some of the highest plateaus in the world - An area of about 965,000 square

  • miles at an elevation of 4,000 to 5,000 meters.

  • It also has the two highest mountain peaks, Everest at 8,849 m and K2 at 8,611 m.

  • These unique heights caused a huge number of deaths for pilots flying over Tibet during

  • the second world war.

  • Tibet also has only two airports.

  • If there's a medical emergency on the aircraft, there are no alternative airfields to land

  • and get help.

  • And even at the two airports, the high altitude can wreak havoc on a fragile patient's breathing.

  • If the plane has a problem and one of the engines goes out, pilots need to engage in

  • drift downprocedures where they gradually and safely lower the plane's altitude to

  • a manageable level.

  • Problem is, with a country as high up as Tibet, the safe altitude for the plane to drift down

  • to may literally be lower than the ground.
