  • This is how the US Military is able to build  a bridge across a river in just minutes.

  • When the military needs to get across  a river or other body of water fast,

  • they call in a very special team who can  build an IRB, or an improved ribbon bridge.

  • An IRB, which was designed by General Dynamicsconsists of foldable, floating aluminum bays,

  • each of which is 22 feet long and weighs nearly  13,000 pounds, that are deployed into the water

  • and connected together to create a bridge, not  unlike a series of pontoon boats lashed together.

  • But unlike tied together boats, these floating  bridges can support an amazing amount of weight.

  • IRBs have no problems with heavy vehicles like

  • fully loaded trucks or even the M1A2  Abrams Tank which weighs over 60 tons!

  • But perhaps most importantly, the US Military  can install an IRB in incredible time. If

  • the conditions are right and the crew of  engineers is well trained, they are able

  • to build an improved ribbon bridge that is  100 meters long in as little as 30 minutes!

This is how the US Military is able to build  a bridge across a river in just minutes.
