  • The atomic bomb.

  • It's one of history's most terrifying and infamous weapons used in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War Two.

  • But how does the weapon of mass destruction actually work?

  • The Unabomber is essentially a thick metal case containing a sphere full of high explosives designed to create an implosion wave within the bomb.

  • There's an even smaller sphere within that sphere normally made of metal like uranium or tungsten, which contains the nuclear reaction that makes the bomb so deadly.

  • It normally contains a small sample of highly radioactive uranium or plutonium.

  • When the explosions occurred, the immense pressure splits the atoms within these fears, resulting in a massive release of energy that manifests as a devastating explosive wave disintegrating anything unfortunate enough to be too close.
