  • -My next guest is a talented actress

  • who you can see on the popular CW show "Riverdale,"

  • which airs Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m.

  • Here is Madelaine Petsch.

  • Madelaine, oh, it is so nice to see you.

  • Thank you so much for coming on the show.

  • I was thinking about this.

  • I don't think I know any other Madelaines.

  • Is there a story about the name?

  • -Hi. Yeah, there is.

  • My parents are from South Africa

  • and they are self-proclaimed hippies

  • and my mom named my brother Sean after my dad, and my mom let

  • my dad name me, and she thought he'd pick something normal

  • or somewhat appropriate.

  • And he picked the name Street.

  • -[ Laughs ]

  • Oh, no, no, no. -Right.

  • My mom was like, "We got to make this work.

  • You can't name a little girl Street."

  • So they picked Lane, like lane on the road, Madelaine.

  • -Ah. That's a great story.

  • -Yeah, my brother called me Street growing up, though,

  • so my dad still got his kicks.

  • -"Riverdale" is now in season 5.

  • For me, I think that was my introduction to you,

  • for your big break.

  • Was it for you as well?

  • What things were you doing before "Riverdale"?

  • -It was beyond my big break, and I'm still thankful for it.

  • I met you, I think, four years ago now, which is nuts.

  • I had like a hundred jobs before "Riverdale."

  • I was a personal assistant for multiple people.

  • I was a photo retoucher.

  • I worked at a coffee shop, at a hookah lounge.

  • But one of my crazy jobs was at a pie shop in North Hollywood.

  • And I had a very interesting closing night

  • once that involved Nicolas Cage.

  • -What? He came in to get some pie?

  • -Yeah, it was like 15 minutes before we close,

  • and I had kind of taken -- we had to wear vests.

  • And I had taken my vest off,

  • and I was like, "I'm gonna clean. No one's coming in."

  • And then Nicolas Cage -- It was like smoke

  • should have billowed in through the door when he came through.

  • It felt like a scene in a movie.

  • He just waltzed in with this group of friends,

  • like, smelled great, looked like he walked off a movie set,

  • and I was like, "Oh, my God, I'm gonna die.

  • I'm gonna die. It's Nicolas Cage."

  • Like, this is 15 minutes before close.

  • I've turned off Madelaine work mode.

  • Like, I'm now ready to go home.

  • And then Nicolas Cage waltzes in and I'm like, "Hi."

  • And he's like, "Hey," and starts rattling off pie orders

  • like it's nobody's business, like 20 slices in 15 seconds.

  • And I'm sitting there and at a certain point I just froze.

  • Stopped touching the screen, stopped putting pie orders in

  • and just a tear rolled down my face.

  • And I just stopped moving. And he was like,

  • "What's going on? Are you okay? Why are you crying?"

  • He was so kind and so nice,

  • but also like, "What is wrong with this girl?"

  • -So he's just rattling off pies like blueberry, coconut cream,

  • lemon meringue, apple.

  • Right? And he's yelling pies at you?

  • -Yeah. And he was like, "I'll get ice cream on that.

  • Ooh, can I get a coffee? Ooh, can I have some --

  • Oh, and then can I have a pecan pie?"

  • He was so excited about pie. Like, I can't blame the guy.

  • They were great pieces of pie,

  • but I was just like, "Oh, my God, Nicolas Cage is in here,

  • and he's ordering pie from me.

  • And I'm crying. What's wrong with you, you dummy?

  • Stop crying.

  • Stop. Move your arm, move your arm."

  • -He would love this story. He's so fun. He's so cool.

  • -He was so kind.

  • I mean, there's a weird girl standing in front of him

  • with a single tear rolling down her face

  • while he was ordering pie from her, which is her job.

  • And he was so kind to me.

  • -You got to do some really cool things in the past few years

  • with the success of the show.

  • I want to talk to you about this documentary you have coming up.

  • -I'm so excited.

  • I mean, there's so many cool things that I've gotten to do

  • because of the show and I'm so thankful,

  • but my parents are most proud of me for this,

  • which is just the cutest thing in the world.

  • I'm executive producing a documentary called

  • "Meat Me Halfway," M-E-A-T.

  • And it's about the effect that meat eating

  • and meat consumption has on the environment.

  • And the reason why I love it so much

  • is I've been raised plant-based, and I never wanted to ever shove

  • those beliefs down people's throats.

  • But I also want to give them the tools and information

  • to make their own educated decisions.

  • And I met Brian Kateman,

  • who has this whole movement called Reducetarianism,

  • which is reducing your meat consumption,

  • not stopping it. It's an unrealistic goal

  • to think the whole world should go vegan.

  • And I reached out to him when I read about his movement

  • and asked him what he's got going on.

  • And he told me he was working on a documentary,

  • and I jumped on with him,

  • and we just hit the ground running.

  • -That's so fun. And I love the title.

  • "Meat Me Halfway."

  • -"Meat Me Halfway." -M-E-A-T.

  • -Yeah, it's really cool.

  • I'm really excited. It comes out in the summer.

  • -Oh, fantastic. Well, come back.

  • We'll talk about that because that'd be great.

  • -I'd love to. Yeah. I'm really excited about it.

  • -You know, I'm a big fan of "Riverdale."

  • What is Cheryl up to?

  • What could possibly be happening this season?

  • -Well, you know, as per usual, Cheryl is just up to no good.

  • You know how it is.

  • She -- We're about to shoot our show

  • episode eight on Wednesday.

  • And she throws a key party.

  • She brings a love interest,

  • a new one for herself, and also her ex-girlfriend

  • because she loves to stir up trouble.

  • -I want to show a clip.

  • Here's a look at tomorrow night's episode of "Riverdale."

  • Check it out.

  • -Ahem. Hear ye, hear ye, fellow friends and fiends.

  • Not that I don't want us swan diving into sad adulthood

  • with babies and marriages and arthritis, et cetera,

  • I'm throwing a party, one last hurrah

  • to celebrate our wild, misspent youth,

  • one final chance to recall our reckless teenage selves.

  • I mean, who could forget my iconic

  • "spin the bottle" parties of yore?

  • -Aren't we a little old for that?

  • -Which is why this little fete will be a key party.

  • -Madelaine Petsch.

  • "Riverdale" airs Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. on the CW.
