S representative Deb Haaland became the first Native American Cabinet secretary after she was confirmed as secretary of the Interior on Monday.

S Senate confirmed the New Mexico Democrat 51 to 40 votes after she clinched support from Republicans, including senators Lindsey Graham, Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins.

Hollande became one of the first to Native American women elected to Congress in 2018.

Her latest ascension to US President Joe Biden's Cabinet followed weeks of campaigning by Native American tribes and environmental groups in support of her historic appointment.

Republican lawmakers grilled her at a two day hearing last month about her involvement in pipeline protests and support of the green New Deal now confirmed.

Hollande will oversee 500 million acres of federal and tribal land, along with the government's relationship with over 500 recognized tribal nations.

Hollande is a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe.

 New Mexico Senator Ben Ray Luhan, who presided over Monday's vote, said Hollande is a beacon for young Native Americans, adding quote, If you see it, you can be it.
