  • My name's Chris Johnson and I'm from Tamworth

  • I've been here for 90% of my life

  • Well, when I was younger, I mean I was right into sports and stuff like that

  • I enjoyed like playing footy and martial arts

  • As I got older, it was just more about work

  • For a period there, I was just looking after my mum, as a carer

  • And then, sort of fell out of the system for so long

  • I hit a point where I was just applying for everything and anything

  • and just getting nowhere

  • That's why I was actually really grateful that jobactive gave me an opportunity

  • I went in for my first appointment and they offered me an opportunity in Hospitality Cert II course

  • I jumped at it

  • I mean, even though I'd already started I figured I'll give it a go

  • I mean everything else I tried up to that stage hadn't worked for me

  • And yeah, I came in and started doing the course and actually really enjoyed it

  • So I work at the Tamworth Regional Youth Centre in the cafe

  • I run the kitchen in here day-to-day, like serving our customers

  • I'm cooking burgers and chips and stuff like that

  • We have students that come through as well and I sort of help look after them as well

  • Hey Chris, how's it going?

  • Good, how's it going?

  • Can I just get a milkshake?

  • Got a good bond with a lot of the young customers

  • on the outside and I've got good relationships with all the kids inside

  • I suppose the best part about having a full-time job is that you can

  • actually get yourself into a better financial position

  • And then once you get in that position there

  • Then you can have more free time to actually do stuff for yourself

  • I see the excitement on the kids' faces

  • I actually really enjoy the job itself here

  • And I mean, I'm happy

  • I feel that with everything I've learned from here

  • It's going to help me so much more to get another position, if I had to

  • I'm just happy working day-to-day

  • Once you get the job, everything just seems to fall back into place for you

  • If I'm talking with any friends or that, I just tell them to hook up with a jobactive provider

  • and if they give them any opportunity, like courses and stuff like that

  • You know, just have to get in and have a go

  • The more you put in, the more opportunity you've got
