  • -My next guest is a very talented actor and comedian.

  • He stars in the highly anticipated sequel

  • "Coming 2 America," which begins streaming

  • on Amazon Prime Video this Friday.

  • People cannot wait for this thing,

  • and there's a good reason -- 'cause it is unbelievably funny.

  • He is great. Here's Jermaine Fowler.

  • Jermaine, thank you for being here, bud.

  • -Hey, yo. Thanks for having me, Jimmy.

  • I appreciate it, dude. Thank you.

  • -I want to get into everything just to get to know you

  • a little bit better because this movie is going to be gigantic.

  • I mean, I can tell you right now,

  • I don't know any inside info, except I just saw the movie,

  • and it is unbelievably funny.

  • -Thank you. -And you're great.

  • -Thank you. -But I want to know about you.

  • Your first love was writing movies.

  • Is that correct? -That is very correct, yes.

  • -And you wrote your first screenplay when you were 11.

  • And can you tell everyone what that was?

  • -I wrote a sequel to that movie, "The Rock," with Sean Connery

  • and Nicolas Cage and Ed Harris when I was like 11 years old.

  • [ Laughs ] -How does the sequel work even?

  • [ Both laugh ]

  • It didn't look like they got off, right?

  • -They escaped Alcatraz.

  • They saved all the hostages. I remember all that.

  • But the sequel, I think I wanted to go to different prisons

  • around the world and make it like a 007 sort of deal

  • where Nicolas Cage had to save everybody from prison.

  • -Oh! That's a good idea.

  • -I mean, I was 11, and that's all I had.

  • [ Laughs ] -I actually like this.

  • -That was the best idea I could come up with.

  • Oh, thanks, man. I appreciate that.

  • Thank you, dude. -This is a good idea.

  • And Nicolas watches our show, so it would be amazing.

  • If you got a call from Nicolas Cage,

  • and he was like, "Jermaine, I love it.

  • Let's do it." -I -- yes. I would say --

  • I would love to work with Nic Cage in a heartbeat.

  • He's still one of my favorite dudes.

  • -Me too. I love Nic Cage.

  • I also read that you were voted class clown

  • when you were in high school,

  • but you had something switched around.

  • Can you explain why?

  • -I would always make my siblings laugh.

  • Like, I would always try to make them laugh,

  • whether it's, you know, telling 'em jokes or, you know,

  • putting on plays at home that I came up with or whatever,

  • and I was always trying to just, you know,

  • lighten the mood in the house. -Yeah.

  • -But my mom always told me, "You want people

  • to laugh with you, not at you," and that was her thing,

  • just to make that, you know, a point of pride for me.

  • And I remember, 12th grade -- 12th grade I got voted

  • class clown as a high school superlative,

  • and I was offended.

  • I was really mad. I was like, "What?

  • I'm not a clown," and I just marched on down...

  • -Wow. -...to my vice principal's

  • office, and I told her, I was like,

  • "Hey, look, my mom, she told me that I want people

  • to laugh with me, not at me, and clowns are

  • the complete opposite of what my mom taught me to be.

  • So could we switch this to something else,

  • maybe The Funniest?"

  • And my vice principal said, "That makes a lot of sense."

  • And I was like, "You damn right it does."

  • So, she basically switched over the superlative to my liking,

  • and I became my 2006 class funniest student

  • of Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland.

  • -I wish I had the confidence to go to my principal,

  • but I also was class clown.

  • -[ Laughs ] -But now I feel like

  • I should have got changed to class funniest.

  • -No, listen, the reason why I did that was I didn't

  • want a whipping from my mom when I got home.

  • It was basically to save me from an ass whipping.

  • That's all it was. [ Both laugh ]

  • -You're like, "Look, mom, they're laughing with me.

  • Trust me, trust me." -"I swear to God, Mom.

  • Please don't hurt me.

  • -I want to talk about "Coming 2 America."

  • This is the sequel.

  • The original came out the year that you were born, in 1988.

  • -Yeah. -And now, check this out.

  • -Ah, man.

  • -Now, when you see this magazine cover,

  • what goes through your mind?

  • -A lot. A lot.

  • I, uh -- I get really emotional.

  • I get really emotional, man. -Good.

  • -Seeing the three of us on -- [ Sighs ]

  • Well, one, 'cause Eddie's, like, just my idol.

  • He's just my idol, and I've watched him and Arsenio

  • do everything growing up and to be, you know --

  • to join them on an "Essence" cover is just huge to me.

  • It just means so much to me, man.

  • When I first saw it, I cried like a bitch.

  • [ Both laugh ]

  • -That was -- How was Eddie on set when you met him?

  • Were you cool, or were you too nervous?

  • -There were moments when he was in his zone.

  • Like, seeing Eddie get into his -- like, the genius zone,

  • seeing him dive into the characters.

  • -Just flip the switch?

  • -Yeah, those are moments where I forget I had scenes with him.

  • I forget, like, I had to do lines,

  • and my co-stars, like, Nomzamo or KiKi would have to

  • hit me in the shoulder, like, "Do your line."

  • I'm like, "Oh, I'm sorry."

  • It's just mesmerizing, dude. It doesn't feel real.

  • -I want to show everyone a clip.

  • Here's Jermaine Fowler in "Coming 2 America."

  • Take a look at this.

  • -I've come back for my son.

  • -Zamunda, Wakanda, Connecticut --

  • I don't know where you from. -Exactly.

  • But I've been enforcing this boy's life since he was born.

  • -I'm Lavelle Junson, all right?

  • I don't need no hand-out.

  • [ Briefcase latch clicks, gold bars clattering ]

  • [ People murmuring ]

  • -Ooh. Gold bars.

  • Are those quarters? Are those gold bars?

  • Is this cash?

  • -Hey, yo, uh...

  • You know, I'm thinking,

  • who am I to say no to becoming a prince?

  • -Jermaine Fowler, everybody. "Coming 2 America"

  • begins streaming on Amazon Prime Video this Friday.

-My next guest is a very talented actor and comedian.
