  • Deputy Chairman Fred Hampton and the Illinois Black Panther Party.

  • Welcome to your weekly ticket with Valentine's Day Just around the corner, we're taking a look at some of our favorite romantic films of all time from classic cinema toe modern love stories.

  • There's something for anyone, whether you're coupled single anti Valentine's Day or just don't even know what day it is Today.

  • I'm joined by film journalist Candice Frederick to help give us, um, personalized recommendations from our list of most watched romantic comedies across voodoo.

  • Candace Romcom seem to have hit like a stale period, but films like crazy rich Asians they like, really proved that the genre still is super popular.

  • What do you think Rahm calms need to do, moving forward to remain popular?

  • Well, I think one of the reasons why Crazy Rich Asians was so well received is because it was not the typical hetero white romance, and that's only like a single romance that goes throughout the entire film.

  • It was something that we haven't, and it's also not.

  • It's an American film that's not primarily set in America.

  • It's primarily set in Singapore, and so it was a film that I think I mean to answer Your question is essentially what people are looking for.

  • And I think yes, to some extent, big blockbuster Rahm coms have gotten stale.

  • But I think once we look outside the box once, we think outside of like, white, straight, hetero and you know, one single couple than I think that there's crazy for station show that there's a lot more land to still be discovered within the genre.

  • Yeah, sure, definitely.

  • Give us a different perspective and really accessed a part that we hadn't been, you know, like showing.

  • So yeah, absolutely.

  • What are some of your favorite wrong calms?

  • Oh, my gosh.

  • I have a list E that's gonna have a list.

  • Well, the one I watch primarily, like all the time every time it comes on is pretty woman.

  • I've seen that a lot, countless times, probably over 50 times.

  • I watch it every it often comes on TV, like every week.

  • So I watch.

  • Do you have that ended that fantasy to get rich and walk into a place and tell them they made a huge mistake just for that reason and e o like like that is extreme high fantasy and I feel like a lot of wrong comes have that kind of like makeover.

  • Just like clueless, I think also has that makeover, which is not often revered as a as a romcom, but it does have romantic aspects in it.

  • But it just Oh, yeah, so yeah.

  • Pretty woman Pretty in pink boomerang I really, really like because it's very interest.

  • I think it's very It's a very smart way of kind of getting into the mind of, ah, you know, black hetero man.

  • Um, which, as we saw in the film, is not always wonderful, but it's a very incisive And he also has challenged throughout the film.

  • So and by the women is life by the women.

  • He dates so that I think have knocked up Oh, foods Russian.

  • I really love Jerry Maguire And the break up.

  • Yeah, I did, I guess.

  • Yeah.

  • Jerry Maguire, You complete me?

  • Yes.

  • Yes.

  • It takes them a while to get there.

  • Yes, he realizes that.

  • E think I've think I've seen guys try that line.

  • You just can't e But that that says something about how romantic comedies kind of play in reality.

  • Like a lot of people consider romantic comedies like Romantic fantasies Are You?

  • Do You think that that's true?

  • Or have you witnessed a sort of romcom situation in real life?

  • I believe that fantasies can happen.

  • I don't think that they happen exactly the way that we've seen them in Romcom is like the most for good ones.

  • Like I mean, pretty woman immediately jumps to my head because I can recite the lines of that movie.

  • And there's a lot of just, of course, like the makeover scene and, you know, getting all this money for a week with, you know, this really rich guy.

  • She comes from like the streets literally, and you know, things like that.

  • I think there are definitely certain elements that are heightened in thes like classic Rahm comes.

  • But I think generally they're generally fantasies fantasies.

  • But I think that there is some reality within just like, you know, being able to like, uh, you know, having a relationship kind of change your outlook on life and how how it could, you know, elevate you to another social class, things like that.

  • But I think, uh, I think what we're seeing in, like the some of the best romcom.

  • Some of the ones that are kind of coming out today are ones that are like the break up, I think, is really good because it also doesn't end on a good note because they actually do break up.

  • But But there's a lot of romance and because it's really about repairing or at least looking at what is irreparable in their relationship.

  • So there's so that has, you know, kind of romantic elements because you have to love someone in order to do that.

  • And so that's why I kind of go to that one, because I do think there's a lot of reality within the conversation that they have in the break up.

  • Um, so, yeah, I do think I think there's a lot.

  • There's been a lot of fantasy and I think a lot of the older romcom wrong cons.

  • But I think Aziz, we move forward.

  • We've been starting to now challenge what we've seen, and it's starting to look different.

  • So I do think there's it's not all the way.

  • Stay on.

  • It's not all the way fantasy.

  • Yeah, it's way funnier when it's closer to reality because you're just like Oh God Yeah, that's how it is sometimes.

  • Biting.

  • Yeah, absolutely.

  • Alright, Well, Candice, thank you so much for coming on the show.
