  • -My next guest is a very funny

  • and talented actor and performer.

  • You can see her in the new movie "Breaking News in Yuba County,"

  • which is in select theaters and on digital February 12th.

  • Here is Bridget Everett.

  • Oh, it is great to see you! Come on.

  • Thank you so much for being here.

  • -Oh, my God! I'm so happy to be here.

  • Thank you for inviting me on.

  • -You look phenomenal.

  • And we have a lot to catch up on.

  • But first things first --

  • I read you're getting your own HBO show,

  • and this is very exciting for me.

  • What can you tell me about this?

  • -Well, thank you. I'm so excited.

  • It's like a lifelong dream to be on HBO

  • and have my own show and sort of dream it from the ground up.

  • It's called "Somebody Somewhere."

  • It's about a woman in her 40s who's sort of been

  • sleepwalking through life, and she is back in her hometown,

  • she's re-engaging with her family

  • and the people there, and she's sort of

  • rediscovering her dreams.

  • And there will be music and singing,

  • and it's just the best of all possible worlds for me.

  • I'm so excited. -Joe's Pub, I want to say,

  • was the first time, I think, I heard about you

  • and heard of you. -Yeah.

  • Was it The Tender Moments? What was the name of the...?

  • -Yeah, that's the name of my band, The Tender Moments.

  • You know who's been a couple times is --

  • Questlove has been there a few times.

  • And I do a lot of audience stuff,

  • and I, like, start walking around the audience,

  • and he's always right there, and as soon as I come out

  • in the house, his eyes just sort of go down.

  • -"Don't pick me, please. Don't do anything."

  • But you are so funny. -But he's so --

  • -Did you sit on his lap and...? You get right in there.

  • -I didn't sit on his lap, but if he comes back,

  • I'm gonna sit on his lap and everybody else's

  • that comes to the show

  • 'cause I'm gonna be so grateful that everybody's there.

  • There's going to be an explosion, Jimmy.

  • It's gonna be an explosion. -An explosion. I will take that.

  • You do get to work with some great people

  • in "Breaking News in Yuba County."

  • I mean, Oscar-winner Allison Janney.

  • Not too shabby. -Not too shabby.

  • There's Wanda Sykes, Juliette Lewis, Awkwafina,

  • Regina Hall -- I mean, it's a real dream teem.

  • And Amanda Idoko wrote the script.

  • It's her first script. It's really amazing.

  • We all shot it down in Mississippi

  • with our director, Tate Taylor. And I was like, "Okay.

  • Mississippi in the summertime.

  • It's going to be a hundred degrees."

  • But I'm peri-menopausal. I see the sun,

  • and I start to sweat, but it did not matter

  • because after we would shoot 12- and 14-hour days,

  • we would go back to Tate's house,

  • and we would have martinis or a little skinny-dipping,

  • and the best were the dance parties, though,

  • with celebrity D.J. Wanda Sykes. -What's Wanda like D.J.'ing?

  • -Well, her name is D.J. Snippets,

  • because she put on Earth, Wind and Fire,

  • and we'd be dancing, everybody would be on the floor dancing

  • for like 45 seconds, and she'd stop it.

  • "All right." And she'd pick another song.

  • So D.J. Snippets. -Questlove kind of does that

  • a little bit, too. Questlove kind of --

  • he plays with your brain because you're like,

  • "Oh, my God!" ♪ Tell me something -- ♪

  • And then he's like, "Nope. Done. Off."

  • D.J. Snippets. -D.J. Snippets always plays

  • my friend Nadia Dajani's party around Thanksgiving.

  • And it's just like -- it's one --

  • it's artistry how he just -- the songs --

  • It's like one smashing into another into an underground

  • into, like, a deep track, and he's an artist,

  • in more ways than one, so...

  • -Also, shout-out to Nadia D, man.

  • -Wanda! Wanda, reach out to Questlove.

  • -Yeah, you guys should get together.

  • Have a snippet-off. [ Laughter ]

  • I would totally -- Listen, I would love that.

  • I wanted to give you -- Poppy made it onto the poster.

  • -Oh, my gosh. -Look at this.

  • You're on the poster for "Breaking News."

  • -Yes! Look at that.

  • Look at that baby girl right there.

  • -Now, is she proud? Was she professional?

  • Did she hit her mark? Talk to me about Poppy.

  • -Jimmy, I thought it was gonna be so extraordinary to, like,

  • be in a movie with Allison Janney,

  • who most of my scenes are with.

  • You know, she's Academy Award winner, all that.

  • And then they're like --

  • But introducing Poppy Louise Mandrell Everett.

  • So they asked if she would be in the movie.

  • She's in a scene with Regina Hall,

  • who's a major movie star, also very cool.

  • Poppy sits on the bed.

  • I'm back in the corner behind the cameras.

  • Poppy nails it on the first take.

  • They do one more for safety, and I'm just back in the corner

  • crying because I was so proud of her.

  • You know, Jimmy, she started off, as you know, in cages.

  • She was having babies against her will.

  • She was a sex worker. And now she's a movie star.

  • She's on a movie poster with all those movie stars.

  • And that is a true --

  • That is "Dreams don't have deadlines" right there.

  • -What's the movie about? How do we set it up?

  • -The movie is -- it stars, Allison Janney as Sue Buttons,

  • and she's sort of like a forgotten housewife,

  • and her husband, played by Matthew Modine, is Karl.

  • He goes missing, and she has 15 minutes of fame,

  • and basically mayhem ensues, and she tries to keep

  • the truth from coming out, and it is a whole lot of fun.

  • She is killer. She's killer in everything,

  • but she's great. -Yeah.

  • -I'd love that.

  • -Bridget, it's become tradition that every time you're here,

  • we end your segment with a song.

  • Now, I know we're talking over Zoom.

  • But I was kind of hoping to keep that tradition going.

  • What do you say to that?

  • -Jimmy, I'd love to sing something hopeful,

  • if that's okay. -Yeah, of course.

  • -It's been obviously such a tough time for everybody.

  • And we're missing our friends and our family and, you know --

  • There's people -- we miss being with the people in the audience

  • and the connections that we have.

  • And I'm just really looking forward

  • to those bright moments with people

  • and especially back in New York City, our town.

  • -Yeah, absolutely. -I'd love to sing this song,

  • and hopefully, we can all be

  • dreaming of those moments together.
