  • -My first guests tonight are two celebrated New Yorkers.

  • They are the Oscar-winning director and the star

  • of the very entertaining limited series "Pretend It's a City,"

  • which is streaming now on Netflix.

  • Here are Martin Scorsese and Fran Lebowitz.

  • Ah, it's so great to see you both here.

  • Thank you so much for doing this.

  • -Great to see you. -You're welcome.

  • -How are you on Zoom? How is this possible?

  • -Are you talking to me? -Yes.

  • [ Laughter ]

  • -I am at a Netflix office.

  • Numerous people set this up.

  • There's many machines here.

  • There are people, as far as I can tell,

  • all around the country... -Yes.

  • -...making this possible. -They really are.

  • -And yet, it's not as good as being in person.

  • -That's right, yeah, yeah.

  • -Even with all this technology.

  • -I'm so happy though that you're doing this.

  • This is amazing.

  • Martin, this is your second documentary of sorts with Fran.

  • Why did you decide to make this series?

  • -You know, we did "Public Speaking."

  • I think it's about 10 years ago,

  • and I didn't know what kind of film it should be.

  • And I was forming it and the editing and kept shooting,

  • and, as we developed the picture, I think it took

  • about a year, year and a half in the cutting,

  • maybe a little more.

  • I don't know. I just sensed --

  • For me, there was a sense of freedom in style,

  • making a film, the structure of a film.

  • Eventually, we kind of came upon the idea that it would be great.

  • It was like a commentary of our culture.

  • Almost like a -- as if Fran,

  • instead of reading a column in a magazine,

  • Fran passes by your house and just says things.

  • -[ Laughs ] -You know?

  • Goes by your apartment, knocks on the door,

  • and she says, "You know, these people down the hall."

  • Whatever. I mean, it's a necessary thing.

  • -Yeah. -She doesn't dr-- She doesn't go

  • in taxis, or, you know, so she's always in the streets,

  • always commenting on things, and some of it, you know,

  • you may not agree with everything, but what I love is,

  • is the sense of it.

  • The common sense of it, more than common sense.

  • And, so for me, why not keep that commentary going?

  • -Yeah, I think people want to see this

  • 'cause I also want to just go up to Fran and be like,

  • "Fran, what do you think of this or what is that?"

  • Just watching this, it's so -- I just love you so much.

  • You know that, but you almost get hit by a car

  • maybe four times in the first episode,

  • because you're the only one paying attention.

  • -That is correct.

  • That's why I almost get hit by a car

  • instead of getting hit by a car. -Yeah.

  • -And if you wanted someone to knock on your door, me, Jimmy,

  • just as your neighbor, that could have happened.

  • [ Laughter ]

  • -I did not take your apartment. That is --

  • -You took my apartment. -I didn't really.

  • -That could've been my apartment, and you could've

  • just come upstairs, knocked on the door.

  • -I didn't know it was you I was outbidding.

  • -Unfortunately, when you go upstairs,

  • it's still your apartment.

  • -I didn't know it was you I was outbidding!

  • I was just talking about -- I didn't know it was you.

  • If I knew it was you, I would have --

  • -It didn't take much to outbid me, believe me.

  • [ Laughter ]

  • -I wanted to ask 'cause I can just imagine what this was like.

  • But there was a lot of -- there's just some beautiful

  • scenes shot around this, like, model of Manhattan

  • that I'd never seen before.

  • It's gorgeous, but it was filmed in Queens at the Queens Museum.

  • I've never even seen it before.

  • Fran, I know you prefer to stay in Manhattan.

  • How did you feel about filming in Queens?

  • -Well, it's, by the way, a model

  • of all of New York City, not just Manhattan.

  • And so it is in Queens.

  • I didn't even know about this thing.

  • A friend of mine had gone recently, a few years ago.

  • He told me about it, so we went and looked at it, and I thought,

  • "This is a great thing for 'Pretend It's a City.'

  • It's a perfect thing."

  • I cannot stress enough how people should go and see this.

  • This is a wonderful, spectacular thing built by Robert Moses,

  • who we all hate,

  • because everything else he did was not miniature,

  • but in miniature, the guy was perfect.

  • -[ Laughing ]

  • -It's funny, because when she'd suggested it, I said, "Where?"

  • And I said, "No, we have all this stuff at The Players Club.

  • We got the stuff in the street. What does she want?

  • A model in Queens?"

  • Look, I was born in Queens, Flushing, so, I mean, okay.

  • But now, why -- do you know what it takes to get there?

  • -Yeah, Marty was --

  • You know, Marty acted like we were going to Afghanistan.

  • -No, seriously. -He's asking, "Where is it?

  • How do we get there?" I said, "Marty, it's in Queens."

  • "It's far, right?" I said, "It's pretty far."

  • "Um, how do we get there?"

  • As if we were going in a caravan of camels

  • or we had to, like, row a little boat to get there.

  • It is a little hard to get there, that is true,

  • which is probably why fewer people

  • see this model than should. -Yeah, it's beautiful.

  • -But it is worth the trip.

  • -Really is worth it,

  • except for when you tripped over the bridge.

  • -I knocked over the Queensboro Bridge,

  • and the guy who was in charge of this model,

  • who was one of the most anxious people I've ever met in my life,

  • because they never let anyone film in there.

  • -He was very nice. Yeah. -He was very nice.

  • But he was very worried, and Marty, of course, came with

  • like 3,000 cameras, you know, and 4 million lights

  • and it took them the whole day to set the shot up.

  • And then I asked the guy,

  • 'cause he said I had to wear these little booties, you know.

  • I said, "I would really rather not wear them.

  • I would prefer not to.

  • I'll just wear my boots."

  • "No, you're not wearing your boots."

  • "I'll wear just my socks."

  • So he kind of said yes.

  • I, like, put one sock on the thing.

  • He had a nervous breakdown. -[ Laughs ]

  • -He said, "No, you have to put these boots on."

  • So I put them on.

  • But I kept saying, "Don't worry.

  • I'm a very careful person." -Oh, my.

  • -And then I knocked over the Queensboro Bridge.

  • -I think I did see your sock there.

  • -The next thing I wanted to do, Jim,

  • was to get the Godzilla suit for her.

  • [ Laughter ]

  • -Just taking over New York. Oh, my gosh.

  • I loved it. It is unbelievable.

  • I recommend it, highly recommend it to everyone watching.

  • I want to show everyone a clip from the series.

  • Here are Martin Scorsese and Fran Lebowitz

  • in "Pretend It's a City." Take a look.

  • -How did you two meet?

  • -Oh, how did we meet?

  • -Do you want to tell her? -Do we know?

  • -No. -No.

  • [ Laughter ]

  • People have often asked me how did I meet Marty,

  • and I don't know, and so I'm assuming I met him at a party.

  • And why do I think that?

  • Because I go to a lot of parties.

  • -John Waters' 50th birthday party?

  • -No, I already knew you then.

  • -No, you knew before, yeah.

  • -I do know that, you know, I knew Marty for a long time,

  • before I knew him well, you know, because I go to

  • a lot more parties than Marty,

  • which is, you know, why Marty's made a lot of movies

  • and I haven't written a lot of books.

  • [ Laughter ]

  • -That's the perfect clip to show.

  • I'm glad it's both of your favorites. Unbelievable.

  • Fran Lebowitz and Martin Scorsese, everybody.

  • Their limited series "Pretend It's a City"

  • is streaming now on Netflix.

  • Watch it right now.

  • More "Tonight Show" after the break.

  • Thank you so much, everybody.
