  • How did you spend your New Year's Eve?

  • Because Mikey writes, he rang in the new year as a hero, jumping into some strong currents.

  • You see it there near Oahu, Hawaii, to save a woman who is not only struggling to swim, but in very real danger of being swept out to sea.

  • Now, right is a pro surfer, and he proved that not all heroes wear capes.

  • Sometimes they don't wear shirts.

  • Sometimes they have mullets.

  • And we have Mikey bright with us this morning on Feel good Friday, Mikey.

  • Thanks for spending part of your new year with us.

  • If you would, though.

  • Take us back to that day.

  • Take us back to the north Shore of Oahu.

  • What were you doing on that afternoon?

  • Yeah, no worries.

  • Thanks for having us.

  • Um, yeah.

  • So we were just, uh Obviously it was New Year's Eve and we're having a few drinks and yeah, that's when it kind of all unfolded.

  • We we looked at out into the front yard and there was a wave kind of surgeon in, and this lady ended up being in a very dangerous situation and started to get swept out to sea so pretty much.

  • Yeah.

  • Jump straight into action and told me Mrs Thio hold my beer and went running down the yard and, uh, it straight down the beach.

  • So?

  • So that that voice we hear that female voice there because I think you guys are guys, like, in a hot tub or in a pool.

  • And you hear a female voice that you're you're not going to save her.

  • I mean, there's a voice.

  • Yeah, borderline cautioning you to stay.

  • So what made you realize you had to go do something?

  • Yeah.

  • No, that was my wife.

  • I actually kind of hurt my neck the few days before, so she was just, like, no, like, you know, but yeah, assumes I seen she was in danger.

  • I just You know, I knew that that person needed saving, and there was no I wasn't sure if there was someone down there that good, but I just ran straight down and jump straight in the water and got tours Quick.

  • Is that good?

  • What was it like in the water?

  • It was a lot of, you know, pushing against the water to get to her.

  • Um, but you know, once I got into her.

  • It was, you know, I just kept telling her like, Hey, you're gonna be okay.

  • You're gonna be all right.

  • You know, we're going to get in and yeah, it was just a matter of time and when, But we just had a few more ways to get through first.

  • And a few more rockets.

  • Yeah, Yeah, it was way.

  • It's easier.

  • Thio perhaps have some confidence here now, you know, within a few days removed, maybe a week removed, and we're both on dry land.

  • But in that moment, when you're in those waves and we've seen this video where you move so far so quickly on that instagram video, how much danger did you feel like you were both in.

  • I felt she was in danger, and that's why I ran in and grabbed her.

  • But once I was in the water with her, like I didn't feel like I was in danger.

  • Like I've grown up in the water.

  • I felt confident, and yeah, I just knew that she was gonna be okay.

  • So people call you a hero.

  • Are you a hero?

  • Are you comfortable with that?

  • Um, no, not really.

  • You know, like the real heroes here.

  • The North saw lifeguard association like they do this.

  • They do the hard work for us.

  • They they're the ones that stay out in the water longer.

  • When you know when we're surfing in, you know, 10 ft plus byline.

  • And even when it is smaller and you know, they're the ones that really save the lives over here And, you know, they had something going on down the beach.

  • So for me to be out of help out in any type of way for those guys, it was a feel good moment for myself.

  • How much contact have you had with her since eso we We got a really nice letter the next day.

  • She came past, and, you know, she said how grateful they were, and and, um, yeah, it was It was really cool to see how you know, appreciate that they were.

  • And how thankful did you get to finish that beer, Mikey?

  • Ah, yeah.

  • Definitely got to finish that beer in a few more.

  • And what were we drinking?

  • Uh, Tom Coleslaw.

  • All right, because we gotta get we gotta get Mikey a deal here.

  • Like we've got to get my Kisum sponsorship when you get back on your board.

  • I don't know how bad the neck injury is, but whatever your back out there doing what you're supposed to do in the water, let's have some sponsorships down some logos or something here to support you.

  • So what'd you do with the rest of your New Year's Eve?

  • Yeah, I just had a few more bees and let them not fly out there.

  • Worse things.

  • There are worse ways to ring in 2021 Mikey.
