  • back to last night's championship game.

  • We've talked a lot about Alabama.

  • Let's talk about Justin Fields.

  • It was dealing with a hip pointer last night, finished with one touchdown pass, led his team in rushing.

  • But it wasn't the night he was hoping for.

  • After the game, he addressed the way he felt.

  • At the end of the day, I was able to play and we didn't get the job done, so I don't think my injury, you know, had in effect I mean, of course, I could have been healthier, but I was healthy enough.

  • E I was.

  • I was able to be out there.

  • We just weren't able to get the job done.

  • Still took some shots on that hip, and, you know, he was.

  • He was not 100% tonight, you know.

  • He was working through it and made some really good throws, made some gutsy plays, you know, kept us in the game there for a while, but he's Ah, he's an unbelievable player.

  • I love him to death and we're really gonna miss him.

  • They had an extraordinary career and you like him not making an excuse of the injury last night.

  • So Dan.

  • Clearly, last night was not the night that Justin Fields was hoping it would be.

  • But let's take a look at some of the reasons why he is going to hear his name called early the first night of the NFL draft.

  • Yeah, first of all, can you be athletic?

  • Can I use you, Thio, open up my playbook And second of all, like, are you able?

  • Do you have the skills, the traits, the assets to make really big time NFL throws?

  • Well, let's look at him as a runner, right?

  • So we know that's part of the NFL right now.

  • This is your traditional zone.

  • Read where he's gonna read this defensive end right here.

  • If that defensive end, if he collapses as this back goes that way, if he collapses Justin Fields, Well, now we can pull the ball.

  • Now we can open up our playbook.

  • We see this with Baltimore with the Buffalo Bills, with the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL.

  • This is a part of the game.

  • So are you athletic enough to do it?

  • Justin Fields is But this is the thing that I really love.

  • Greeny.

  • I mean, this is a safety from Alabama.

  • This isn't a safety from some small school that he can.

  • He can out athlete.

  • This guy's a good player as well.

  • The defense has won the reps, so to speak, and he's athletic enough to make that guy missing the open field and then be able to run away from the defense.

  • That's a trait that's a skill that we see in the NFL.

  • That's necessary.

  • But the question is gonna be, well, what kind of thrower are you of the football?

  • This is my favorite.

  • Throw the night, Maybe of the whole game.

  • Olive is out here.

  • He's gonna inside release to run a go route.

  • His big tight end Rucker is gonna go down the middle of that scene.

  • Now.

  • This safety right here is the read now, three things that I love about this play from Justin Fields.

  • Now, first of all, when you get the snap, I want to see that you're gonna confirm coverage.

  • He's gonna stare to his left.

  • There's another safety over here.

  • Everyone alright.

  • So he's confirming right safety?

  • You stayed out over there.

  • You didn't come to the middle of field because that would change my read.

  • So as he stays out there.

  • He's confirming the coverage at the snap.

  • Then he's gonna come back and peek that coverage right now.

  • He's gonna put his eyes on that safety.

  • I told you a lot.

  • He's got that outside release go route and here comes record.

  • What does this safety Dio?

  • If this safety hangs towards the middle of field, that ball is gonna get kicked out to a lobby on the go route.

  • And if that safety goes outside where he's supposed Thio, I've gotta work record on that scene.

  • That safety is turning his hips.

  • Okay, that safety is driving.

  • Here comes record this balls gotta go to record down that seem.

  • Justin Fields.

  • He's making his decision.

  • Look, he's like, Alright, that ball is going to come out of my hands.

  • But this is the thing that I love that big time coverage.

  • Now I don't care if it's flag football on Westport High School.

  • College NFL.

  • That's great coverage.

  • You guys hear me say this all the all the time.

  • Don't make all the throws.

  • Make the right throw this balls gotta throw over the top of that trailing defender.

  • Look at this throw by Justin Fields.

  • I mean, that is absolutely perfect record, big fella.

  • Get your hand out there.

  • I love it.

  • That's the perfect throw.

  • So you see the ability toe to be an athlete to be used in the run game, but also make the right read and throw at the same time.

  • He's got the traits to be a big time quarterback in the NFL.

  • Absolutely, and he didn't run as much last night as he frequently has.

  • A T least in part.

  • You have to believe because of the injury we will see.

  • He will hear his name called early on that Thursday night.

  • The question is how early?

  • We'll have a lot of time to get ready for that.
