  • ♪ ♪ ♪ >> Stephen: HEY, EVERYBODY,

  • WE'RE BACK HERE WITH THE STAR AND DIRECTOR OF THE NEW MOVIE

  • "THE MIDNIGHT SKY," MR. GEORGE CLOONEY.

  • YOU HAVE STARRED IN AND PRODUCED AND DIRECTED A NEW FILM CALLED

  • "THE MIDNIGHT SKY."

  • IT'S ON NETFLIX NEXT WEDNESDAY, IF I'M BEING ADVISED CORRECTLY

  • HERE.

  • WHAT'S IT ABOUT, GEORGE?

  • >> UH, IT'S-- IT'S KIND OF ABOUT WHAT MAN IS CAPABLE OF DOING TO

  • ONE ANOTHER IF WE DON'T PAY ATTENTION, I THINK.

  • YOU KNOW, IT WAS ABOUT-- IT'S A FILM ABOUT, YOU KNOW, THERE'S

  • BEEN SOME FORM OF AN ARMAGEDDON.

  • WE LEAVE THAT A LITTLE UP TO THE VIEWER TO DECIDE.

  • AND THERE'S BASICALLY ONE OF THE LAST MEN ON EARTH, AND HE'S

  • TRYING TO-- HE'S UP IN THE ARCTIC, AND HE'S TRYING TO GET A

  • HOLD OF A SPACESHIP THAT WAS SENT OFF TO LOOK FOR ANOTHER

  • PLACE TO LIVE.

  • AND SINCE THEY'VE BEEN GONE FOR TWO YEARS, HE'S TRYING TO TELL

  • THEM NOT TO COME BACK BECAUSE THINGS HAVEN'T GONE SO WELL.

  • AND THEY CAN'T GET AHOLD OF EACH OTHER, AND IT'S A BATTLE BETWEEN

  • THEM.

  • BUT, YOU KNOW, IT'S A FILM ABOUT REGRET.

  • IT'S A FILM ABOUT COMING TO TERMS WITH THAT, AND SEEKING

  • REDEMPTION.

  • AND I ALWAYS THINK THAT, YOU KNOW, REGRET IS SUCH A POWERFUL

  • THING IN ALL OF US, AND PARTICULARLY, THE OLDER YOU GET,

  • BECAUSE YOU CAN'T TAKE THINGS BACK ANYMORE.

  • AND IT'S A REAL TOXIN AND REAL POISON, AND SEEKING REDEMPTION

  • BECOMES A BIGGER AND BIGGER ISSUE.

  • SO I LIKE THE THEMES OF THAT KIND OF A STORY.

  • >> Stephen: WE HAVE A CLIP HERE.

  • I'M GOING TO SHOW THIS IN JUST ONE SECOND, AND THEN I'M GOING

  • TO ASK YOU ABOUT HOW THIS WAS ACTUALLY SHOT.

  • >> OKAY.

  • >> Stephen: JIM.

  • WHITEOUT BLIZZARD.

  • WHERE DID YOU SHOOT THAT?

  • >> IN A WHITEOUT BLIZZARD IN ICELAND.

  • >> Stephen: WOW.

  • >> YOU COULDN'T SEE YOUR HAND IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE.

  • YOU KNOW, WE WOULD SHOOT PIECES, AND MY EYE LASHES-- MY EYES

  • WOULD FREEZE SHUT IN ABOUT A MINUTE.

  • AND I WOULD GRAB SOMEBODY BY THE SHOULDER, AND THEY'D WALK ME

  • INTO THE VAN, AND I'D BLODRY MY EYE LASHES OPEN, AND WE'D ROLL

  • BACK THE FILM TO SEE IF WE GOT IT BECAUSE YOU CAN'T TELL.

  • IT'S A 65-MILLIMETER CAMERA, AND YOU'RE HOLDING IT LIKE THIS, AND

  • YOU CAN'T TELL WHAT YOU'RE GETTING.

  • >> Stephen: BUT HOW DO YOU PLAN FOR THOSE CONDITIONS I

  • MEAN-- >> YOU KNOW, WE WANT THOSE

  • CONDITIONS, RIGHT.

  • >> Stephen: I KNOW, BUT HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO GET

  • THEM?

  • >> WE DON'T.

  • YOU KNOW, THAT'S-- YOU KNOW, LUCK HAS TO PLAY A LITTLE

  • SOMETHING.

  • ALTHOUGH, YOU KNOW, WHAT WE DID KNOW IS THAT'S NOT SNOWING,

  • BELIEVE IT OR NOT.

  • IT'S A CLEAR, SUNNY, BEAUTIFUL DAY.

  • YOU COULD SEE FOR 100 MILES.

  • IT'S A WIND-- IT'S LIKE A HURRICANE THAT COMES UP THAT

  • KICKS UP THE SNOW.

  • SO IT COMES IN A WALL, AND YOU SEE IT COMING, AND IT'S LIKE

  • EVERYBODY GET READY.

  • WE'RE TIED WITH ROPES TO EACH OTHER, BECAUSE YOU CAN GET LOST

  • IN IT.

  • AND OU'RE STANDING THERE, "READY?

  • EVERYBODY READY?

  • HERE IT COMES."

  • AND IT HITS YOU, AND YOU SHOOT AS FAST AS YOU CAN.

  • >> Stephen: WE HAVE TO TAKE ANOTHER BREAK.

  • STICK AROUND.

  • WHEN WE COME BACK, I'LL ASK GEORGE ABOUT THE CONVERSATION HE

  • HAD WITH WALTER CRONKITE, THAT MIGHT SURPRISE YOU.
