  • British actress Dame Barbara Windsor, has died at the age of 83.

  • Windsor first found fame in the carry on films back in the sixties, later becoming a household name in her role as per bland lady Peggy Mitchell in the soap EastEnders.

  • Her husband, Scott Mitchell, released a statement saying that she had died peacefully at a London care home on Thursday night.

  • Windsor was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2014 and campaigned form or government action on the disease.

  • In a statement, her husband said.

  • I will always be immensely proud of Barbra's courage, dignity and generosity, dealing with her own illness and still trying to help others by raising awareness.

  • Windsor made her debut on EastEnders in 1994 and quit in 2000 and nine, saying she wanted to spend more time with her husband, whom she married in 2000.

  • On quitting, she said her role is Peggy Mitchell, which saw her famously shout Get out of my pub.
