  • -Our next guest is a Golden Globe nominated actress

  • who stars in the highly anticipated new film --

  • I can't wait for this -- "Mank,"

  • which is available this Friday on Netflix.

  • Here is our pal Lily Collins.

  • Lily, oh, you look fantastic.

  • I'm so happy. -Aww.

  • -I always love having you on the show.

  • So much has happened since I last saw you.

  • Weirdly, I was talking to Nick Kroll

  • about how he recently got married a few weeks ago --

  • -Oh, yeah, yeah. -And it was really cool.

  • But you got engaged.

  • -I did! -Look at this!

  • Tell me about this! -I know!

  • -Congrats!

  • -That's in Santa Fe, in New Mexico.

  • And, um, Charlie, my fiancé, organized the whole thing.

  • It was a total surprise.

  • He literally set up his phone

  • and his professional camera next to each other

  • and put the self-timer on.

  • And it's actually funny, because he set it up,

  • 'cause we thought we were going to be doing a family portrait

  • with our dog, Redford, and I was like, "Babe, it's record--

  • It's on video. Like, you need it on photo."

  • And he's like, "Oh, yeah. Oops. You're right."

  • And then he, like, switched it to photo. We took a photo.

  • And then I was like, "Let's do another one."

  • And he switched it to video without me knowing it,

  • because I totally messed it up

  • and called him out the first time.

  • And he was like, "[Panting] Oh, my God."

  • -"I planned this whole thing out! Just stop talking!

  • Just say yes." -Exactly.

  • There I am, like, trying to control the situation.

  • I'm like, "Just let him be the director."

  • -We need these moments.

  • -Yeah. No, I'm very, very happy. We're all happy.

  • -I want to congratulate you also on "Emily in Paris."

  • It became a phenomenon.

  • And it was -- Just got picked up for Season 2.

  • -Yes.

  • -I wanted to get to the bottom of something,

  • because Netflix recently came out and said

  • that we've been saying the title wrong the whole time.

  • They said apparently it's supposed to rhyme.

  • -Emily in "Paree." I guess.

  • -Emily in "Paree"? Is that correct?

  • -Well, okay, so, here's the thing.

  • When we were shooting in Paris,

  • we heard people referencing as that more often, right?

  • 'Cause we're in Paris, and the accent.

  • I was like, "Oh, yeah, it rhymes. That's cute."

  • Literally forgot about it, came back home.

  • It was never a big thing, and then I felt like I was one

  • with every single other person in the world

  • that found that out the same day.

  • 'Cause I was like, "Wait, have I been saying it wrong?"

  • We've all been saying, "Emily in Paris."

  • And I was like, "Oh, my God. I fell for it."

  • -"I'm Emily." -Yeah, so -- I'm Emily,

  • and I even was saying it wrong.

  • -I'm not saying "Paree." -So, go figure, I feel like --

  • No, I feel like that's actually something

  • Emily herself would be like,

  • "Well, I guess I was part of the joke."

  • -Wow, yeah, exactly, right. Yeah.

  • You know what I even love?

  • The attention to -- Obviously the fashion,

  • but the attention to detail, and the --

  • your phone case.

  • -Oh, my -- Oh, my gosh. The phone case. That's so fun.

  • Now it's like sold out everywhere.

  • The phone case was actually -- -I want one.

  • -I know. I'm like, "How do I get one?"

  • The phone case was actually Patricia Field's phone case.

  • And in our first fitting together, for the show --

  • 'Cause, you know, I was a producer on it, as well.

  • So we got to talk about the aesthetic of it

  • and like what Emily would look like

  • and how she feels in her clothes.

  • And she was like, "You know what?

  • Carrie Bradshaw from 'Sex in the City' had her tutu.

  • Like, we need to find Emily's tutu."

  • And she had an amazing phone case on her neck

  • with a big chain, and we were both like, "That's super cool."

  • And she's like, "It is, right?

  • I was thinking maybe this could be her thing."

  • -It's perfect. -It kind of became Emily's tutu.

  • -Well done. Congrats on that. -Thank you.

  • -Hope you're having fun with all that success.

  • But now here comes "Mank," this new film.

  • Can you set it up for everybody?

  • -Yeah. So, Gary Oldman plays Herman Mankiewicz,

  • who wrote "Citizen Kane" for Orson Welles.

  • And it's kind of this untold story of Herman Mankiewicz

  • and what he went through

  • in order to take credit for writing "Citizen Kane"

  • and the politics of the golden era of Hollywood

  • and how it plays into his story.

  • And I play Rita Alexander, who is a British stenographer

  • who is brought in to work for Herman Mankiewicz

  • after he gets into an accident

  • and needs help to transcribe his script.

  • So, I become his kind of -- his stenographer,

  • his confidante kind of secretary but really close friend.

  • And all my scenes are with the incomparable Gary Oldman,

  • and it's all in black and white and moody and beautiful,

  • and it's the genius of David Fincher.

  • So it was kind of an utter dream come true.

  • So fun.

  • -Obviously we both love this business.

  • That's why we're in it. But, I mean,

  • did you get to shoot at -- in studios and on lots

  • and be like, "I'm getting the buzz. This is so fun."

  • -Yeah, we actually to shoot in some of the real locations

  • because, you know, we're still in Hollywood,

  • and all of the stuff that happened

  • happened in these locations.

  • I also got to shoot in the actual ranch in Victorville,

  • where Mankiewicz and his team worked on the script

  • when he his accident.

  • So we were in the actual location all these years later,

  • and then they recreated the inside on a studio lot,

  • so it was like the magic of Hollywood

  • and also the reality of the world, and it was a dream.

  • And having it be black and white

  • and then having these incredible fade-in and fade-outs

  • like old movies and the lighting,

  • it really was a blast from the past.

  • -You sent us an exclusive clip

  • that I really -- Thank you for doing that.

  • I want to show everyone, here.

  • Here are Lily Collins and Gary Oldman in "Mank."

  • Take a look at this.

  • -This Mrs. Alexander.

  • She types 100 perfect words a minute

  • and takes dictation like a clairvoyant.

  • Rita Alexander, Herman Mankiewicz.

  • -How do you do, Mr. Mankiewicz?

  • -That's a big question.

  • -Well, since you like working nights,

  • Rita here runs on London time.

  • Her husband is one of our bold lads in the RAF.

  • Flies, what is it, Rita, Spitfires?

  • -Hurricanes. -My sympathy and prayers.

  • -I beg your pardon?

  • -Given the speed, climb, and turning radius

  • of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 --

  • -I hope we won't need your sympathy, Mr. Mankiewicz.

  • We'll do the praying and the fighting.

  • -Lily Collins. Check out "Mank" this Friday on Netflix.

  • We will be right back with the performance from Matt Berninger.

  • Stick around everybody.

  • Thank you, Lily. Congrats.

  • -Thank you! Mwah. -So good to see you.
