  • -You got to know my next guests over 30 years ago

  • when "Saved by the Bell" first premiered.

  • Gosh, has it been 30 years? No way.

  • Now they're starring and producing a reimagining

  • of the original.

  • The entire new season of "Saved by the Bell"

  • is streaming right now as we speak on Peacock.

  • Here's the original cast of "Saved by the Bell" --

  • Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren,

  • Mario Lopez, and Tiffani Thiessen.

  • Yes, it is great to see you guys!

  • -Great to see you. -Hi.

  • -Hi. -Oh, my gosh.

  • You all look great. Thank you so much.

  • We have so much to talk about.

  • Our shows have a lot of history together

  • because when I first started "Late Night" in 2009,

  • I tried to get you guys together for a reunion.

  • And then it took us long --

  • And then five years -- five years ago,

  • it finally happened.

  • -Oh, my God. I was so pregnant.

  • -Oh, that's right. We put that in the script.

  • -In real life. -That's right.

  • Did this start the seed -- or it started kind of before this.

  • But did it start the seed of trying to see what the new

  • reimagining of the show would be?

  • -I think all of us getting dropped back into

  • that iconic hallway with those red lockers,

  • in that garb again, and with you,

  • it was kind of epic.

  • And I think it kind of sparked interest,

  • especially because reboots were kind of coming back.

  • But something about it was kind of magical with you.

  • And I think we all were kind of thinking,

  • if it could be done right --

  • you know, we wanted to do it justice,

  • but if it could be done right, then we may all be in.

  • -Mark-Paul, for the first time ever,

  • you recently decided to go back and watch

  • old episodes of the original, and you're documenting

  • the whole process on a podcast

  • called "Zack to the Future."

  • What goes through your mind when you watch these episodes?

  • This is fascinating to me.

  • -Pain and torture, Jimmy. -Wait, wh--

  • [ Laughter ] -Wait, why?

  • -I mean, because I'm one of those actors

  • that I don't watch my own work.

  • You know, I kind of watch like this, you know,

  • when I'm rewatching my work.

  • And there was a reason why, you know,

  • I never watched an episode of this show.

  • It just -- it was 30 years ago,

  • we shot them, we lived them,

  • and then you just sort of move on.

  • So watching the show now,

  • it is hard for me to watch myself.

  • I -- saying that, I love watching the cast.

  • I think that, you know, Mario and Elizabeth

  • and Tiffani and Dustin and the rest of the cast,

  • they did amazing work.

  • I feel like I'm the weakest link of it.

  • -No -- -And so each week --

  • Well, Elizabeth, we talked about this on the show.

  • -Not true! -"The Los Angeles Times"

  • even said that I was the worst of that show

  • when it premiered.

  • -And they've been right every time, right, Mark-Paul?

  • -Oh, please, come on.

  • -They were absolutely right that time.

  • -I thought it would be fun to revisit

  • some classic scenes, and just hear

  • what you guys think of these.

  • If you don't mind, just a couple of our favorites.

  • -This is your life. -I'm excited.

  • -Yeah. First up -- -Here we go.

  • First up is the A.C. Slater/Zack Morris fight.

  • Now, dude, this is a big deal.

  • You guys were -- -You know what, Jimmy?

  • I'm really proud of this fight. I'ma tell you why.

  • Not only did I -- choreographing this fight scene here,

  • but it looked legit, and people split-screen it

  • with the "Rocky IV" Balboa/Drago fight,

  • and it's awesome the way --

  • -It holds up. -It's so funny because

  • that fight would never happen in our time now.

  • Like, two kids on our set, we'd have stunt doubles,

  • we'd have a stunt coordinator. -Padding.

  • -It would have been like -- padding,

  • like, there would have been cuts.

  • That was legit. Like, you and I --

  • -That's a good point. That's a good point.

  • -We pushed each other, we fought each other.

  • It was like real deal.

  • I mean, that was a good -- everything, it was well done.

  • -There was a lot of teenage hormones happening.

  • -Oh, yeah. -That is kind of --

  • -It's kind of insane. -Oh, my God. You guys.

  • -Right? -[ Laughs ]

  • -My next clip, this was prom,

  • and this is Kelly and Zack's first kiss.

  • -Aw! -Tiffani and Mark-Paul,

  • do you remember shooting this? Were you nervous?

  • I mean, you guys were kids.

  • -Totally. I completely remember.

  • I remember that sweatshirt, it became such a big deal.

  • -That's right. No way.

  • -Was I nervous? Mark-Paul, were you nervous?

  • -Yeah, I can imagine I was nervous.

  • I didn't really -- I didn't have, like, you know,

  • a resume of people that I had kissed up until that point.

  • So, you know, one of my very first kisses

  • was on "Miss Bliss" with Stevie the rock star.

  • So you might have been, like, my second kiss.

  • -Aw! -So I was probably nervous.

  • You know, you want to make sure that you're doing it right,

  • and that you -- you know, you're not being offensive

  • with your breath or some other things that might pop up.

  • -Mark-Paul, you were a total gentleman.

  • You were a total gentleman. You still are.

  • You always have been. -Always.

  • -Aw. -I made sure I was wearing

  • two-ply underwear at that -- that day.

  • [ Laughter ]

  • -All right. TMI, TMI.

  • This last one, we have to end with the all-time classic,

  • Elizabeth. Dave, can we roll the clip?

  • -Oh, no. -You can't sing tonight.

  • -Yes, I mean, come on --

  • What do you remember about that day?

  • Did you have any idea that that moment would be one of

  • the most beloved scenes in television history?

  • -No.

  • I mean, we had no idea, right, Mark-Paul?

  • I mean, I remember we did a couple takes and it was good.

  • And then they told us to just -- that they got it,

  • and now just let it rip. We did.

  • -Little-known fact, but the little pills,

  • the caffeine pills were Red Hots.

  • -Yes. -Yep, I remember that.

  • -Oh, really? -So we were popping those

  • between takes. -Oh, yeah, sugar high,

  • and, yeah.

  • -Let's talk about the new show.

  • Who can set it up?

  • -So, essentially, it's 30 years later,

  • and we're back at Bayside High, which takes place

  • in this fictitious town here in California.

  • Zack is the governor of California,

  • still married to Kelly,

  • who is obviously the First Lady.

  • Jessie is now a guidance counselor at the school.

  • I'm an athletic director,

  • and those are essentially our roles there,

  • we come across this new group of kids,

  • who, some of which have been bussed in, now,

  • -Guys, we could talk about old times all day,
