  • -Welcome back. I'm here

  • with Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski.

  • Guys, I wanted to ask you quickly

  • because Thanksgiving is a couple days away,

  • and while many families

  • won't be celebrating together this year,

  • even when families do get together virtually,

  • politics inevitably come up.

  • Mika, you and Joe notably don't agree on everything politically.

  • -No. Mnh-mnh. -I find that so fun to watch,

  • and I think you do it -- you do it perfectly.

  • Do you have advice for families that don't have

  • the same political beliefs?

  • -Don't talk. I mean just literally,

  • don't talk about it for Thanksgiving,

  • but seriously, don't text about it.

  • You need to see your family member face-to-face

  • and understand their whole reality

  • and maybe pull back on politics because this will take some time

  • to understand each other's position.

  • -Well, and Mika knows about this firsthand

  • because, during the Iraq War,

  • her brother, who's a Republican,

  • worked for Don Rumsfeld in the Pentagon.

  • And her dad, of course... -It was -- Yeah.

  • -...was -- was fiercely opposed to the Iraq War.

  • And, Mika, how did that end up?

  • -There was a very bad Thanksgiving dinner,

  • and I would just suggest that everybody be grateful.

  • We have our health.

  • If we want to stay healthy, don't gather.

  • And don't talk, and have a great time.

  • [ Laughter ]

  • -Joe, your new book, "Saving Freedom," is out today.

  • It is about President Harry Truman.

  • How did you decide to write a book about him?

  • I don't know much about Truman.

  • -You know, Truman was an extraordinary president.

  • He is a guy that was always underestimated.

  • When FDR decided to select him in 1944 as a compromise --

  • they called him the Second Missouri Compromise --

  • his own Chief of Staff said, "Who the hell is Harry Truman?"

  • Well, he got elected vice president.

  • FDR died three months later after they got sworn in,

  • and after his first cabinet meeting,

  • his Secretary of Defense came over and was like,

  • "Hey, hey. Come here.

  • Hey, we've got something called an atomic bomb."

  • And so Harry Truman had to --

  • talk about learning on the job --

  • he had to learn very quickly,

  • but not only did he guide America to victory

  • in World War II at the end,

  • but he also -- he created this post-war structure.

  • And so here was this guy that,

  • again, he was called a strange little man

  • by the top historian of his time.

  • "The New York Times" called him a rube.

  • "Time" magazine called him

  • "the mousy little man from Missouri."

  • But he had such a successful presidency...

  • -Painful. -...that historians now --

  • despite the fact he left office with a 22% approval rating,

  • the lowest ever --

  • historians today consider him

  • to be the most significant president in foreign policy

  • over the past 75 years.

  • And in his time, Winston Churchill said

  • that no one more than Harry Truman

  • saved Western civilization.

  • So, an incredible story about this --

  • this underestimated man from Missouri.

  • -I'm excited to give it a read.

  • "Saving Freedom" is available now.

  • It's out today.

  • Thank you both for being here.

  • And every time I see you guys,

  • I think of when we first started on "Late Night"

  • and how good you guys were to me and our team over here.

  • So, thanks again, guys,

  • and hopefully you have a very safe and happy Thanksgiving.

  • -You, too. -Thank you so much.

  • -Thank you so much. -Happy anniversary, Joe.

  • -Oh, thank you, sweetie. -[ Laughs ]

  • -I'm glad you remembered. -Happy anniversary.

  • Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, everybody.

  • You can see them on "Morning Joe,"

  • airing weekdays at 6:00 a.m. on MSNBC,

  • and Joe's book "Saving Freedom:

  • Truman, the Cold War, and the Fight for Western Civilization"

  • is out now.

-Welcome back. I'm here
