  • -My next guest is a very talented actor.

  • He stars in the new film "Uncle Frank,"

  • which begins streaming tomorrow on Amazon Prime Video.

  • Here's our pal Paul Bettany.

  • Paul, it is great to see you. It is --

  • Come on. What is the --

  • -What? What are you --

  • I mean, let me just tell you, just --

  • I'm gonna be the worst interview ever.

  • Nothing fun or kind or even noteworthy

  • has happened to me in nine months.

  • -Well... -So, you know,

  • good luck with your interview. -[ Laughing ]

  • -Well, I will say, how about -- Thanksgiving is two days away.

  • -Oh, yeah. -Are you excited about that?

  • That should be fun. -No, not really.

  • No, I mean, here's the thing about Thanksgiving is,

  • I've been here -- I've lived here for 20 years.

  • I still have no idea what it's for.

  • I mean, is it like a dress rehearsal

  • for Christmas or something? I mean, what is the --

  • -You're giving thanks. -What's the point of it?

  • -Say what? Oh, we're giving thanks.

  • Okay. Well, you could give thanks for not --

  • I've been listening for two decades

  • to all of my American friends bitching and moaning

  • about having to go see their dreadful

  • right-wing Republican in-laws, and then, finally,

  • they've got an excuse not to go, and everybody's suddenly like,

  • "Oh, my God, you can't take Thanksgiving away."

  • I mean, I literally -- I don't understand it.

  • I mean, I got to say, I do like the --

  • I do like the food, except you do a few weird things.

  • Well, they're not even weird, they're unholy.

  • Like, you put marshmallows on top of -- on sweet potatoes

  • and stuff, which is like -- are you are trying

  • to bring on the rapture or something?

  • [ Laughter ] -Some people --

  • Yeah, I understand.

  • That one took it a little bit too far, but, yeah.

  • I want to talk about your new film, "Uncle Frank."

  • Before, though, I wanted to mention your new Marvel

  • Disney+ show that's coming soon that I cannot wait for --

  • "WandaVision." It's basically a Marvel sitcom,

  • and you filmed it in front of a live studio audience.

  • It looks like it's from the '50s or the '40s,

  • like a "I Love Lucy" type of thing.

  • What was that like for you to film in front

  • of a live studio audience -- to do a sitcom?

  • -I was incredibly nervous about the whole thing.

  • I haven't been in front of a live studio audience

  • for 20 years or something like that.

  • And then, I, um, um, um...

  • You know, it just really pointed out great things

  • about my character, like how shallow I am,

  • because you have this really -- you have this trapped studio --

  • You know this -- you have a trapped audience.

  • They feel obliged to laugh. -They're not trapped.

  • They want to be here. [ Both laugh ]

  • They want to be here. They love to laugh.

  • But no one's trapped. They were psyched.

  • And then, you recite these lines,

  • you get see Paul Bettany at his best, and --

  • Just to see you in person would be fun.

  • But then, you get to crack jokes.

  • And, I think -- -You get to crack jokes?

  • It actually reminded me of a time where I was --

  • I was in -- I was in the Czech Republic,

  • and I was making a movie called "A Knight's Tale,"

  • and I had to do these speeches, in English,

  • in front of a Czech audience,

  • and they had to laugh uproariously,

  • and, of course, they didn't understand a word I was saying,

  • so they wrote these -- -Crickets.

  • -Yeah. So they wrote these cards

  • that said "Laugh" in Czech.

  • And they would lift them up, and everybody would laugh.

  • And there was literally no beginning to my depths.

  • Because I felt like I was killing people.

  • You know what I mean? -Yeah, no, you feel that way.

  • You go, "Oh, come on. Don't fake laugh at me.

  • Please, just --" Yeah, either earn it

  • or don't earn it, yeah. -Oh, God, I did not feel that.

  • I felt the absolute opposite of that.

  • It was enough for me. -Oh, really?

  • Oh, that would've driven me crazy.

  • -Oh, I don't have any personal resources.

  • I'm incredibly shallow. So, like, just the action

  • of people laughing was enough for me.

  • They didn't even need to mean it.

  • -So you were actually just going, like,

  • "This is the way it is. This is the way it should be.

  • When I say the thing, you laugh."

  • -100%. 100%.

  • I found -- I have found my wheelhouse.

  • I've ruined my life. I've wasted my life.

  • I should've been in sitcoms the whole time.

  • That's what I should've -- Yeah, totally.

  • -It looks -- It looks so cool.

  • It's, like, black-and-white, but it's in HD.

  • It just looks -- I don't know how to describe it.

  • "WandaVision." I'm looking forward to it.

  • Disney+.

  • But I want to talk about your new film, "Uncle Frank."

  • It premiered at Sundance, and it's getting great reviews.

  • You in particular are getting great reviews.

  • Can you set up this film? -It is part coming-of-age story,

  • and that part is taken care of by Sophia Lillis,

  • who's just amazing in the movie,

  • and it's part coming-out story, which I deal with.

  • I play this guy called Frank. He's from South Carolina,

  • but he is living in New York, in the '70s,

  • and he has a partner, who's a man,

  • who's played by Peter Macdissi, whose name is Wally.

  • And he's keeping the two parts of his life separate.

  • And he hasn't come out to his family in the South.

  • And the death of his father means that he has to --

  • he has to head home to the South.

  • And the two parts -- the two parts of his life

  • just come sort of crashing together.

  • And it's -- it's a moving film. But with jokes.

  • -Well, hopefully, people can watch this and get a few laughs,

  • but also start some conversations.

  • It's awesome that you did this, bud.

  • I want to show everyone a clip.

  • Here's Paul Bettany in "Uncle Frank."

  • Take a look at this.

  • -So, that's two rooms at $14 each.

  • -I don't think we need two rooms.

  • We can make do with just one, if you have a cot.

  • -What is the relationship?

  • -Hmm?

  • -The relationship between the two of you.

  • And the young lady over there.

  • -Oh, she's my niece.

  • -I'm his nephew.

  • -I'm afraid I'm gonna need the young lady

  • to stay in her own room.

  • -Yeah. That makes sense.

  • -Okay.

  • -Paul Bettany, everybody.

  • "Uncle Frank" begins streaming on Amazon Prime Video tomorrow.

  • Paul, any time in the world, if you're feeling down,

  • you can come on my show, and that's my job to flip it around.

  • You're the funniest and the coolest.

  • We love you, buddy. Congrats,

  • and come back whenever. -I love you, too, man.

-My next guest is a very talented actor.
