  • -My next guest is a five-time Emmy winner

  • and a "New York Times" best-selling author.

  • His latest book, "No Time Like the Future:

  • An Optimist Considers Mortality,"

  • is available right now.

  • It's a must-have.

  • Here is Michael J. Fox.

  • Yeah!

  • Michael J. Fox, thank you so much

  • for taking time to do this, buddy.

  • You look great.

  • I want to talk about the book.

  • But first, how are Tracy and the kids?

  • -They're great. They're great.

  • -They're doing good?

  • -They're grown up. They're all adults now,

  • so they're coming back for Thanksgiving.

  • We're not going to have a virtual Thanksgiving.

  • We're going to have real Thanksgiving.

  • We can't have the whole family, but it'll be great.

  • -By the way, I always kick myself

  • because I think the last time I saw your girls,

  • I was like, "Hey, if they want to babysit or anything,

  • you know, I got little kids."

  • And you're like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah."

  • Like, they're adults.

  • [ Laughter ] They have jobs.

  • They have jobs. I go --

  • But I'm such a -- I'm a dad now.

  • I don't know what I'm talking about.

  • But anyways, best to them.

  • Best to your whole family, please, for me.

  • You had such a legendary career.

  • Hard to believe after I'm reading these things

  • that you've been acting for over 40 years.

  • There's been so much written about you over the years

  • that sometimes it's hard to tell what's fact from fiction.

  • So I thought we could go over a few myths that are out there

  • about you and find out if they're actually true.

  • Is that okay?

  • -Oh, yeah.

  • -Alright, bud. I think I know one of these.

  • Alright, here we go, the first one -- you once watched

  • "Back to the Future" while sitting next to Princess Diana.

  • Is that true? -Yeah.

  • At the world premiere --

  • It's true, the world premiere in London.

  • She's sitting next to me, and the lights go down.

  • And the movie starts, and I realize I'm one yawn and --

  • fake yawn and arm stretch away from being on a date with her.

  • -Oh, come on. -Which is hilarious.

  • -You were not, come on. -But then what happened was

  • the movie started, and also I had to go pee.

  • And so for the rest of the movie,

  • I'm sitting there, like, dying.

  • I can't say anything to her and I can't walk away from her

  • because I can't turn my back on her.

  • So it was just agony.

  • It could've been the greatest night of my life.

  • But it was just a nightmare, a nightmare.

  • -[ Laughs ]

  • Did she like the movie? Did she laugh? Did she clap?

  • -She seemed to laugh a couple of times.

  • She wasn't booing it. -Were you nervous?

  • Did you know that you were going to be sitting next to her?

  • -I didn't realize I was sitting next to her

  • till before the movie started.

  • And the seat next to me was empty.

  • And we were all standing because the royals were coming.

  • So I sat -- Well, it's either her or Charles.

  • I don't think Charles wants to sit next to me

  • through the movie. -[ Laughs ]

  • -So it was her, and she was great.

  • -Wow! -She was sweet.

  • -That is so cool, man.

  • I love hearing those stories.

  • The next one here, I think I know this one.

  • Your middle name doesn't actually begin with a J.

  • And I think I know for a fact

  • because my sister was an uber fan of yours.

  • I think your middle name actually begins with an A

  • if I'm right. -Yes.

  • Yes, it was Michael Andrew Fox.

  • I came from Canada, but Michael A?

  • Like Michael, eh, Fox?

  • -[ Laughs ] Michael, Eh?

  • Michael, eh? -Michael, eh, Fox?

  • -Fox, eh? -Michael, eh, Fox, eh?

  • You hoser. -[ Laughs ]

  • Hoser, oh, my God.

  • Yeah, you would get crushed.

  • -So I changed it to Michael J. because of Michael J. Pollard,

  • the actor Michael J. Pollard, who was in "Bonnie and Clyde."

  • He was just cool, this kind of rubber-faced character actor,

  • and he was brilliant, and so I'm named after him.

  • -Did you ever think of putting a name to the letter J?

  • -Yeah. Jenuine. -[ Laughs ]

  • Jenuine or Jenius.

  • -Genius with a J is perfect.

  • I remember was like -- and her friends, they were all like,

  • "He actually is Michael A. Fox because he is a fox.

  • He's such a fox! He's so foxy!"

  • -I didn't want to presume that. -That's how I remember that.

  • Speaking of foxy, by the way, look at foxy over here.

  • But then look at this.

  • Look at that "Teen Beat" guy. Come on.

  • He's foxy and he's also -- he's got a lot of thoughts.

  • He's got a lot of thoughts.

  • -He's a thinking man. He's a thinking man.

  • A lot of thinking going on.

  • A lot of heat coming off in the palm of that hand.

  • -[ Laughs ]

  • -It's shooting up the arm, and it's magic.

  • -Hey, you know, the book has so many stories in it.

  • But also it talks about the Michael J. Fox Foundation

  • and what you've done for Parkinson's research.

  • I got to say -- I think over $1 billion you've raised?

  • -Yeah, in 20 years, practically a billion dollars to research.

  • It's been amazing.

  • It's a credit to all the patients and their families

  • and the researchers and our staff.

  • We just want to get it done.

  • I mean, 20 years is great.

  • We put that much time in it.

  • We've done as much as work as we've done,

  • and a billion dollars is great,

  • but we want to go out of business.

  • I'm done with this.

  • -I love that.

  • Let's do it till you're out of business.

  • I love it, man.

  • I would say that's your biggest accomplishment

  • had I not met your family because, gosh,

  • you got a beautiful family, buddy.

  • I love you.

  • I also love -- I got a little shout-out in the book.

  • You talk about our golf adventures.

  • And one of -- I'm on a list of great names.

  • And you call me a "seasoned player."

  • -Yeah, seasoned, a little salty.

  • -Oh, that type of seasoning.

  • -No, no, no, you're a great player.

  • You hit a shot one day when we were out there.

  • God knows, 5:00 in the morning it was.

  • It was so early.

  • And you hit a shot out of the bunker.

  • 15, 20 feet onto the green and into the hole.

  • It was an amazing shot, and I even took pictures of it.

  • And you carry it and you show it all the time.

  • -I do remember that shot, by the way!

  • I was -- I was -- It definitely sounds like me

  • if I'm in the bunker, but wait.

  • I do remember I chipped it out of there

  • and it went in the hole. -A roar went up.

  • A roar went up in the -- Everyone on the other holes

  • was wondering what was happening on our hole.

  • -That was so fun, man.

  • Well, we got to do it again. -A great shot. Yeah.

  • -Bud, I love you. Congrats on the book.

  • Please give my best to the family.

  • Come back whenever you want.

  • Michael J. Fox, everybody.

  • His book "No Time Like the Future:

  • An Optimist Considers Mortality" is available now.
